A TOOL INSPECTION - 1943

TM 9-803 lists a number of procedures to be followed "Before-Operation Service". One of the items to be checked before driving the jeep was: "See that tools and equipment are all present, properly stowed, and serviceable." This is one of the many examples of the importance that the US Army placed on jeep tools and equipment. The photo is titled: "SC 177839. Layout of tools and equipment of reconnaissance ¼ ton truck. Camp Carson, Colo. 5/1/43. 811th Tank Destroyer Battalion." This photo shows that tools and equipment were part of the Army's inspection process. This implies that if a particular tool were lost it would have been replaced before the next inspection. The replacement tools would have been issued from supply and were probably not an exact duplicate of the tool supplied by Ford or Willys. I believe that the tools with an US Army inventory number ( the 41-W- xxxx numbers) embossed or stamped on them are from this source.
