The proper shovel is called a D Handle, Round Point, Number 2 Shovel. The shovel was placed on the jeep after it had been assigned by the Army. This meant the shovel would have come out of existing stores or been ordered locally. This may explain the large variety of right shovels for the jeep. Any brand of shovel that meets the above criteria, fits the holder, and was made by a manufacturer that produced shovels during WWII could be proper. Both the head and handle were painted OD green. The shovel pictured in the photo still retains some on the original OD paint. The only markings on this particular shovel are 2 / HEAT TREATED. |
