Tire Chains

pic53.jpg The tire chains are sized to fit a 6:00 x 16 inch tire. I do not have a set of original WWII tire chains. Looking at vintage photos, it appears that the original chains had:

1. 39 normal links on each side, not counting the attachment part.
2. 9 cross pieces, made up of 9 twist links and 2 special end links.
3. The twist links had no additional traction pieces welded on.
4. Willys and Ford used different methods of attaching the chains when installed.
pic80.gif Two sets of chains were carried in every jeep, one set for each axle. Pictured is a reproduction label printed on vintage chain bag. The label was copied from a photograph. As this label has a Ford script, it would seem, that chains supplied for Willys jeeps, came in yet a different bag.
