The ax was placed on the jeep after it had been assigned by the Army. The ax could come out of existing stores or could be special ordered. This may explain the large variety of "right" axes for the jeep. Any brand, that fits the holder, made by a manufacturer that produced axes during WWII may be proper.
Both the head and handle were painted OD Green. The ax pictured in the photo still retains some of the original OD paint. Even more interesting, is that the handle of this ax has taken on a permanent bend, due to being strapped on a jeep. The only marking on this particular ax is the number 4 stamped in the head. |
