THE BOX: The box is a cardboard box. It is 10 3/8 inches wide, 20 inches long, and 5 3/8 inches deep. The top has been sealed with 3 inches wide tan masking tape. There are no signs of glue or staples holding the top. The markings on the box are printed on with black ink. Once the US Army had taken possession of the vehicle, the contents of this box would have been stowed in their proper positions. With no further need to retain this box, it would have been disposed of. We can only speculate that the MB Mr. Frederick was luckily able to purchase in 1946 was indeed a brand new jeep. The factory supplied compliment of tools and spare parts remained unopened, still in the original box. Because Mr. Frederick did not discard this box in 1946, we have a real "Time Capsule" to investigate in 1999. |
