GPW 19671

I happened across this early 1942 Ford script, serial # 19671 just after the fifty-something owner had decided to pull it out of the woods to "get rid of some stuff I don't use". I always thought I'd pay through the nose for any WW2 Jeep and have to travel across the country to find one, but here it was only 10 miles from my house. My friend told me about it when he drove past it one day. She's rough, missing the front bumper, back seat, gas tank, top bows and air cleaner assembly, but also has 2 combat rims, titled with all 3 original brass glovebox data plates still in place, complete intact drive train in need of rebuilding, lots of good "F" marked parts still on it:(radiator, 3 bolt tire carrier, pintle hitch, front seat frames, etc.), a boxful of extra parts, all guages, and 27,000 original miles too. It's just that this last owner had it since 1971, and except for only one month of on the road driving in 1976, he only drove it around the farm. He says he couldn't get it insured through State Farm in '76 because it didn't have turn signals. He then thought he'd just plow snow with it but never did, and he estimates he added MAYBE 700 miles to the odometer in 35 years. He says he paid $200 for it back in 1971, (it was "green with a few white stars" and only missing the top canvas, bows and fender light) and since he never really used it alot, he wanted to get his money back...so $200 made it mine. It's a great vehicle to be my first Jeep, kind of a rusty time capsule, as it is still pretty original, and aside from his crappy attempt at body work and 2 poor paint jobs, the vehicle really has not been bubbafied. I'm also reportedly the third postwar owner. But the BEST part was that in dealing with the seller, he never ever once mentioned "Ford script", "GPW", "WW2", "Army", "olive drab" or even "military"...to him it was, 35 years ago, and still is today, just an old $200 green Jeep.
