An interesting site. Another photo here from the same source showing an MTU section operative inspecting shot up Jeeps on Okinawa. The caption stated that the unrepairable vehicles would be salvaged for parts. Note only the third Jeep has marine contract extras. But what is going on behind the bumper of the first vehicle? Looks very much to me as though the exhaust has been redirected through the grille.

Those are two very cool photos. 8)

I have other photos of the exhaust coming out like that and the muffler across the top of the frame in front of the grill.

Fascinating. Why on earth would that mod have taken place. Whilst I assume that the pipe in the hood is to take air directly into the carb for deep-fording, the whole concept comes unstuck when the water goes (indeed in this configuration is DRIVEN, unless the Jeep only goes backwards) straight up the exhaust pipe.

Surely all it would have done is to make the riders' life very unpleasant with the reek of exhaust fumes.

Would not the exhaust fumes stop water coming in, however if you stopped the engine !

You gentlemen are thinking these jeeps were driven... not so. They were 3000# mobile radio systems, not a jeep with a radio in it. Most of the time they sat with the operator running the radio and driver keeping the engine running at 1100 rpm. I can't imagine them going very far on an island that is a mile by two miles like Iwo Jima.

They may have moved the exhaust so it would be far from the operator as the engine had a 45 minute running duty cycle per hour when transmitting.

Sounds logical to me...

And they wouldn´t burn their legs on the hot exhaust anymore while standing next to the jeep...

...or just stalled it in water. C'mon somebody, what is the point of that mod?

Edit...I hadn't seen the last two posts. Of course. Now I understand.

The Australian Army also used this exhaust mod:

May be they used this mode against the deep mud and water increase the ford ability of the jeep. :?:
