ignition/voltmeter wiring

Postby Steve Webb » Sat Sep 25, 2010 12:12 pm

I am in brain freeze currently. Doing my wiring harness now and what I have is a harness from VOM. I am using a 1 wire alternator and also using a voltage gauge instead of an anmeter. I also am using a conventional switch not a foot operated starter. On the back of my ignition switch I have 4 terminals 1 marked ignition (that should be 12v positive right?) 1 marked batt (that should be 12v negative right) 1 marked acc (that should feed the voltage meter and anything else?) 4 goes to starter solenoid. The VOM harness has tags for the anmeter but I am assuming the same wiring is used for the voltage meter. Search function is turning up bits and pieces but not completely helpful. Thankfully it is raining so I have to quit before I do anything stupid.

O.K. got out meter and no battery negative to the switch (dead short) I have it figured out for terminals based on switch position. What would have been on acc for a older jeep? I am going to be using electric wipers so that would be only thing I can think of.

Hello Steve<

1-Ignition = power wire to coil or ballast resister if one is used. Power wire to volt meter. Power to any other items you wish to be powered when the switch is in the run position.
2-Battery = + 12 volts from battery positive terminal or starter's battery terminal or from the battery side (large stud) of the start solenoid if you have key start.
3-Accessory = Any electrical circuits that you want powered only with the key in the accessory position.
4-Starter = small terminal on starter solenoid.

If an amp meter is not used then you simply connect those two wires together.

Thanks Wes, I am at least old and wise enough now to stop when something doesn't make sense instead of wasting time and blowing up equipment. I have never liked automotive wring as it is so different than a/c wiring that I have done in my 3+ decades as an electrician
