water pump replacement M151

Postby wreckerman » Sun Jun 20, 2010 7:23 pm

I went back and looked through the archives and found some conflicting information on NOS ans civi replacement water pumps for the M151 family of jeeps. Anyone got new information on this topic? Which pumps work and don't work? Please give any stock numbers that you may have.

Thank you

Hi Dan,

I can't be of any help with the civvy cross over part numbers, but I can tell you that if your original water pump housing and impeller is still in good shape, you can rebuild it yourself with a kit from Saturn Surplus. It comes with a new shaft and bearing, and seal.

Best of all it will only run you about $23 for the kit. If you have a press or have access to one, it's really easy to do.

Hope that helps.

There are some "Civilian parts lists" that have been floating mostly unchanged for about fifteen years. More than half of the list is wrong or misleading. They list the water pump as "58-244 reman water pump" whatever that means. Some of the corrected lists no longer show this. There is so much surplus floating around out there I would avoid using something that is supposedly compatible unless it is an emergency.

We have done two rebuilds in the past with kits from Saturn and they worked just fine. If I had the choice of a rebuilt GI or some new manufacture I would opt for the rebuilt providing it is done well.

There is a civilian pump that is a exact replacement bit I do not remember the number right now. Someone I was helping a few years ago had a swamp buggy that was based on a 151 and they were not interested in the high prices of the surplus parts. I had told him about this particular number but could not guarantee it. He called me back and told me that it cost 35.00 and was identical right down to the casting number. All I can tell you is that it was a Cardone number, I can't remember the number.

Hi

Thanks for the information so far. Up here in Canada we don't have the easy access to the surplus that is in the U.S. Napa lists the pump as WP 58244. Napa Canada lists it but doesn't have it in stock and if they did they quoted $204 ( !!! ). The average Ebay ' buy it now' is $68. On the Napa web site it lists the pump as beinf for a M151 Jeep truck. If anyone has access to lots of cross reference material the casting number is 8754598. I'm probably going to order up a couple of rebuild kits to repair the pumps I have but would like to get a complete pump in the meantime.

Thanks to all those that have replied.

Someone just asked an identical question over at G838. The Cardon number for the water pump is 58-421.

Here is a link to that thread.

Sorry to revive and old thread.
I just bought the Saturn Surplus rebuild kit for my water pump. Assembly won't be too big of a deal. However my question is what lube for the seal and brass slinger where there will be metal to metal friction and where the seal will ride the impeller?
