Coil problem

I am working on a M151 A1 for a museum and it has a bad coil. The coil has a plastic shell that has cracked in several places and leaked oil into the distributor. The bad coil is different than the other coils I have seen for sale. Here is the info that is on the bad coil.

ORD PT No. 8712400
MFR PT No. 200735 (D)
Prestolite 24V
Use with external resistor


It is shorter than the other USGI coils I have seen and it sits on a disk with two wires coming out of it. The other coil I have is too tall and will not work. Anyone know if these coils are still availble?

The "Disk with two wires coming out of it" IS the exernal resistor mentioned above. The "Tall coil" is interchangable with the"short coil and resistor.

So I should be able to remove the resistor and and use the other "tall" coil I have?

In the late 60's a shorter 24V Coil with an external ballast resistor placed beneath it was introduced by Prestolite. It had something to do with allowing cooler operation of the coil. The older longer coil will work just fine.

Be careful with handling that oil. Older coils made before the late 1970's had PCBs in the dielectric oil. PCB is bad stuff. It is a known carcinogen. It's effects are cumulative as it builds up in fat in the body. PCB also will easily soak through most types of commonly used rubber, PVC, or latex gloves, so they should be immediately disposed of when cleaning up.

I have seen the shorter coils with a foam rubber spacer in the bottom. Remove the foam spacer and the tall one should work just fine. If you have a shorter coil and no foam/rubber spacer then make one out of and old inner tube or other like material to obtain the correct highth.

I got it fixed. With the resistor removed the tall coil fit right in and the engine runs. Now on to the exhaust leaks :evil:

The two exhaust ports in the middle of the head are leaking. I tried the copper gaskets but that did not work. I was going to replace the exhaust manifold with a NOS one but the owner of the MUTT did not get one and told me "Just get it running with what we have" :roll:

I ahve this exact issue. How did you remove the resistor from the distributor? I can't see to get it out.

Pull up on the wires.
