PRC-660 radio manual

Postby GPW43 » Thu Jan 14, 2010 4:31 pm

Gents,
I am not sure if the 1980s radio topic is Kosher @ G503 but if it is not I apologize ahead of time. I recently acquired a PRC-660 manpack radio and need to get my hands onto a manual as to know how to power it up. It did not come with a battery and the battery plug naturally isn't marked (just A, B, C, etc). I took the plug out to see if I could identify the group and positive voltage pins but found two grounded pins and no clear path to the positive lead. Any help is greatly appreciated. I know the working voltage 24-28 v but don't know the pins.

A manual would be the best thing for me. I plan on testing it and giving it as a gift to my brother to mount it on his M151.

THx,

Not Canadian, made in Israel by Tadiran its a UHF military Aircraft Radio 229.0 to 399.0 freq. theres a muount for it if you want to run it in a vehicle much the same as you would mount the PRC-77, uses the MT-1029 mount there on epay from time to time. Scott out

Zareh,

I have a full set of manuals for the PRC-660 that I can help you get your set going. The set operates on +24v so it can be powered directly from most current M series vehicles. I have several of them myself along with the vehicle adapter and RF amp. Let me know what you need. I'm in San Jose by the way so if you want to get together we can.

One of the easiest ways to identify the proper pins is to check them with an ohmmeter. Almost every military radio is negative ground so any pin with 0 resistance to ground is negative. Pins that aren't grounded but who's resistance drops or changes when the radio is switched on is generally the positive input. This isn't cast in stone but is a pretty good starting point. The 660 shares it's format with the PRC-25/77s and a lot of other equipment so things like battery boxes are available. I have some extras. The batterys however are not available and you have to build up your own power packs. The 25 and 77 batterys look similar but they are the wrong votage. The connector is rotated 180 degrees so you can't install them.

hello from australia. the x-army radio prc-660 is now working as good base station.take of they battery cover and look down on the bottom of your prc-660 and see the 5 pin male connectors, now look for two that has a spot of paint in be tween them, my radio has this paint spot. now the pin on the right of the spot is the male pin to use and the one on the left of the paint spot is the other one to use.now get your multimeter and on the ohms scale test both of the male pins.one is ground and one is for the red cable/wier.you only need two wiers/cables to work this radio.and a dc power supply of ar ound 24 to 28 volts.butt my radio is working fine on 24 voltsat 0.22amps hour.please donot use a 24 volt car battery or u will and can stuff up ur radio.my dc power supply is made in china and 0 to30 volts at 0 to 5 amps adjustable.i hope this helps you out with ur radio type prc-660.they are a realy good radio.i love my radio type prc-660.if u need to know more email at ghost_whowalks@optusnet.com.au
