Strange T84 found (for sale:)

This is a T24/M29/M29C weasel Transmission. The give away is the filler plug elbow extension fitted to the transmission housing. This was a field modification fitted to increase the fluid capacity of the transmission.
This transmission may be fitted in other applications but in this case I can confidently say it is for a Weasel.

Not factory original, but possible an original WWII (or somewhere in the last 65 years) mod.

The street elbow is indeed an original WWII field expedient for the Weasel. TB 9-772-FE1 (7 September 1944) covers its installation so that the gearbox capacity is increased from a pint to a quart. The TB states that when correctly positioned, the elbow turned should be turned towards the rear of the transmission and the lower lip set at 1" above the lower edge of the plug the elbow is in. This mod and TB # was also referred to in Army Motors Volume 5 (December 1944) page 261.

John is absolutely correct - except that the real reason for the elbow was so you could fill the darned thing at all. Since it rests quite well down in the Weasel hull you are going to have to fill it via a right-angle of some kind.

Nice, John, got any history on it? An early Tucker 743 Freighter. I presume it is somewhere in the Snowy Mountains area as that's the only place thereabouts you could use one. A - ABLE is at the Christchurch museum in New Zealand and may well be the next closest one. I sold an MH-SNOGO down that way last year.

Not wanting to go too far off-thread here. Tucker built military versions of this thing (CARRIER - QUADRI-TRACKED) but they looked to be well over weight compared with the standard production, which is why USAF procurement was of the standard vehicle for use on the DEW Line and similar projects. Tucker also did a lot of the prototyping on the T26 Snow Tractor that later became the Allis-Chalmers M7 Snow Tractor.

Yes this Tucker is indeed in the Snowy Mtns. I can put you in contact with the owner. Other than that I know little of the vehicle history.
