E-brake mod for overdrive

Postby Mike Seymour » Thu Dec 03, 2009 11:30 pm

I have a new Saturn overdrive to put in my '53 M38a1. I've heard that the emergency brake handle has to be moved back some and the linkage modified. Anyone have information or pics of the modification?

Hello Mike,
I suggested to someone else a while back to leave the handle where it is and drop the linkage to go with a push/pull or stranded steel pull cable control.

This is the illustration I sent him. After you have the Odrive in and all the transfer back in place you fabricate a 3/16" or 1/4" steel guide tube and attach one end to the hole in the floor where the original rod came thru to the handle and bend/shape it as needed to end up the distance from the actuating arm that allows for full up travel of the arm to set the brake and clamp that end of the tube as shown. Then using a length of 7x19 1/8" stranded steel wire you attach one end to the actuating arm and thread the cable thru the tube and attach the top end to the handle. Be sure to set the length of the cable so that you have adequate free play and positive shoe setting. I use nicopress swages and a crimping tool to fabricate the attaching loop ends in the cable. You can find them in the fence wire section of you farme's store.

Dave,
Mike's not going to go fast. He's trying to save on gas so he can save up for the down payment on a new motor home!

I could have bought a lot of gas for what this overdrive cost, Wes. Have you priced one of these puppies lately.
Already did the motorhome thing...I'm back to a pick-up and camper...

I had a Warn OD on my M38 back during my misguided youth in the mid 70s. I was able to bring the speedo needle nearly back around to zero on a good long downhill stretch of highway. That thing was expensive back then. Bought it new from Trail City in Reynoldsburg Ohio.

David, It's either spend it foolishly on myself or leave it for the kids....A no brainer as far as I'm concerned. :D
