Chevy 1503 "Staff car" ?

Postby Viking27 » Wed Apr 01, 2009 8:33 pm

Dear all,

I have a 1957 Chevy model 1503 which has a military dataplate on the
dashboard. "US Property" marked. How ever, I cant find any information
on it. Does anyone here have any old photos or info on this car? Is it a
"Staff car" ?

OD green paint still visible:

I am very interested in seeing photos of similar cars in military use, so I can figure out how to put the military markings on it.

rgus,

Yes, you are so right! I actually came very close having to sell it because of lack of storage space! I now have sorted that out, and this car will be restored as proper military veihcle and not a modified hot rod!

:)

I found a Wiring Diagram which should be for your car. I will send it to you if you tell me where to send it.

They were all clones, just basic 1957 Chevrolet Civilian model 150 bare bones 4 door sedans with a 235cu in 6 cylinder engine, and 3 speed standard shift. Army had most , were painted the standard 14087 Gloss OD, USAF had them in Strata Blue. Extra accessories were limited to heater and Cigarette Lighter, no radios. They were a familiar site at any Army base thru the late 60s.
Those used by MPs had white band at window line on doors.

I know they were clones more or less. I was hoping to find manuals for the 1957 Model 150 or 1503 to help a friend restore one. Service manuals are hard to find.

Ebay will be your best friend, Hemmings will also be very usefull. Any recent Hemmings magazine will give you months of good use.

As far as the Military version goes, the only difference from civilian is paint, USA Registration, and additition of Data Plates. Those in MP service had radio equipment in the trunk, wirg siren added.

Thanks, for info. Side note since I notice you're from Aberdeen, what do you have available for the M37B1 circa 1959?

Justhim: Yes, I would be greatful if you email me the wiring diagram. Please send to: hinrik(nospam) (a) ww2.is

Ben: Thanks for info. I will try to strip the doors and see if I find a white stripe indicating MP use. I doubt I will find it, think the doors have been sanded down.

Any idea how they marked the doors? White star with "US Army" ?

Believe it or not, I bought a 1957 car just like yours a month ago in Tampa Fla. It has the same nomenclature plate on the dash as yours. The inside seats have been replaced with buckets and back seat also replaced. Also painted yellow with white top. Been modified alot but still salvageable. Haven't thought too much about taking it too its original colors but maybe so. Have any questions that I might help you with let me know.
