The Monster!

Post by clintm20 » Sat Mar 22, 2008 5:21 am

This wrecker was at the local jeep dealership when I was a kid. I'm told the wrecker body was a commercial add on. I didn't remeber the name on the grill. Gott a love it. :D
It still exists and it is very near me so I'm going to check it out today. It was sand blasted and then never painted and very rusty from what I hear.

It's possibly a Corbitt.

Yes, Corbitt. Guess I'm trying to do too much at once. Corbitt manufactured a wrecker similar to the Kenworth, I have no idea where my written information is. I confirmed it somewhere, abd have too much reference data scattered whereever I can find room. Am sure someone else will confirm in due time.

Do you maybe mean Ward LaFrance and Kenworth built similar 10 Tons?

The answer may be in one of the early WWII issues of Army Motors, but what is a fact is that that the M-1 Wrecker series started out with a design by Corbitt. The award for the first of the production M-1 series of wreckers was awarded to Ward LaFrance, Kenworth was added to the list for additional production capacity. All these evolved into the M1A1 wreckers. Kenworth ended production in November 1943 leaving Ward LaFrance as the sole manufacturer. I gotta do more digging, and have no idea where to start, nor the time.
The Corbitt Wrecker topic started back in 1957 with our mechanic Dave McQuarrie who operated one, and I am positive that information that supports this claim exists.
The guy who can answer this is wrecker expert Stan Poole who used to sell manuals thru MVCC before selling out to portrayal Press.

Corbitt built a 7.5 ton wrecker, the 54SD6. There is a picture of one in Crismon on page 373 showing one of the 4th Ordnance Co. on maneuvers in 1941. It looks very similar to the WLF M1.

Ben do you have a sister name Eileen? :)

Tracked down the Monster on Friday with the help of a walking old truck encyclopedia named Jeff. We had fun and saw some neat stuff. Also found an open cab WW2 Diamond-T which is rare in these parts. In the same yard was a 1929 Seagrave FE and a 1924 White. Time has not been kind to the monster and it has a diesel in it now. The wrecker body looks home made to me, sorta like they looked at a picture of a Holmes and made their own.

I thought Corbitts' WWII 7.5 wrecker was made in the C-2 configuration like the Federal, Sterling and Biederman wreckers, (the Sterling was technically classed as a 10 ton). However the Corbitt wrecker nose was different than the nose on the truck posted.
I used to own 2 Sterlings (DDS235 and HCS 330) , a Federal (C-2) and various International wreckers. I had a total of 22 trucks until the town adopted new zoning laws. David
