Rear View Mirror on Windshield

Postby Bob at Warsaw » Sat Feb 02, 2008 5:35 pm

Hi Group

Did the military ever make a rear view mirror
for the GPW and MB that was mounted on the
windshield, are is the ones i have seen came
from bubba. If so why is there a hole in the
rear of a canvas top?

Thanks
Bob

Bob,

It wasn't a factory thing, but there are enough period photos of WW2 jeeps that show a (re-located or extra) mirror using the top-center bolt hole. Sure beats trying to use the worthless side mirror!

Bob, here's a pic of my dad and his jeep in 1945 with what appears to be a center mounted rear view mirror.

The GPA mirror lends itself to adding to a jeep.... if you can find one...

Hello Soldat

You are so lucky to have a pic of your dad standing
infront of his jeep showing the hood numbers.
Not many of out there have that.
Can you tell me what outfit he was in, by the bumper
markings, and where the picture was taken.
Thanks
Bob

Don't see one in Rons catalogue but (due to possible litigation this name has been blocked) has one.

I have found if you are using the original wipers(manual) then the mirror needs to mount pretty low to clear the crossbar i was gonna use my original cj2a rearview but am undecided now due to how low i need to mount it

Logical answer: fresh air!

Jokes aside: here in Europe, there are repro rear mirrors from the bigger Dodges with a small bracket that mounts to the outer windshield with one single screw...
It works fine, even with the small rear "window" in the top.

Hello Bob, the picture was taken in Japan during occupation duty. He was an M.P. with the 24th Infantry. Thank you for your interest.
