Early speedo

Postby jkc » Thu Dec 27, 2007 6:00 pm

Did the VEP GPWs have the same early speedos as the Slat Grill JEEPs?

Thank you,

not that I know of. Other's will chime in, but most of the "Early Willys" stuff dosen't hold true for the early Fords. If you have one, it's gold though!

Heres a pic of what i understand to be the original speedo. This is the type of speedo in GPW 11730 and many other VEP GPW's i have seen.

speedo for GPWs

Postby Chuck Lutz » Fri Dec 28, 2007 10:35 am

I don't have any speedos to sell, I have a couple down with Sean in Oz being rebuilt that will come back to me when he buys his calibration equipment, but I think that the EARLY GPWs with the data plate that says "65MPH" Max Speed had a different speedo from the later data plate that says "60MPH" Max Speed.

I have a King-Seeley with three additional one-mile ticks PAST the "60" on the face that I believe is the proper early one. Sean has pics of most of the speedos, but I don't think he has one marked like this although he describes it on the speedo section.

There are THREE different KS speedos I know of, plus the Stewart-Warner and the two different needle type Walthams. Check Sean's site for further info on speedos and other guage dates and look at Jon's guage info on Jeepdraw.

Bob, I think that is an alpha numeric up there. There might be some writing in the same location along the bottom, not seen in Ian's pic.

Ian, Just based on the needle, my speedo in 12078 used to look like that too.

Oops, Sorry guys! I may have mis lead you then! I just saved this pic from ebay as a reference pic in general. From memory, it is similar (or the same) to 11730's- i shall go have a look. If there are differences, i`ll post a pic of the speedo from 11730 and edit my above post.

Cheers,
Ian.

I know the Max speed change happened wilth MBs but when did it happen with GPWs ? I don't believe I have never seen a GPW with a Max 60 MPH data plate.

speed kills

Postby Chuck Lutz » Fri Dec 28, 2007 8:53 pm

Tom...now you have me wondering also...I checked the two data plates with the info on them that I own and both are on the original glove box doors and next to the original serial number data plate with original rivets....but one is a 14,000 and the other is on GPW17963..

Both are "65"...so perhaps that change of speed is not found on the GPW plates although you'd be not very likely to find many speedos that would register the speed the data plate suggests is OK for 3rd gear (65MPH).

Wonder if someone with an MB glove box door with original data plates with original rivets with a LOW numbered (slat?) serial number and another with a higher serial number (150000 or so?) could tell us what the 3rd gear speed max is on the data plate?

Hi all,

Checked the speedo on 11730 and it is the same as the one I pictured. It is dated as with, in what i would say, is the correct range for a speedo for my DOD- markings of K2 ring a bell but i`d need to recheck. All my other guages also have the same dating as the speedo.

Bob- sorry, forgot to check the numbers, but as luke said, they are numbers- part number i guess. Apart from the speed indications, these are the only markings on the face.
