Frank, is there a GPW hub wrench? Every one I have seen is marked GP-17033.

Wrenches were not Ford marked but special tools not to QMC specs. were.

Add another wrench maker to the Ford list.

I have dug a bit in my photo archive and found a photo of a tool kit for the 2GA staff car (1942). You can clearly see the wrenches are marked "Fairmont". They are chrome finished as is the pliers and the adjustable (Cresent type) wrench.

Of course this does not mean that the GPW came with these same wrenches but does show their use by Ford.

I'm curious if anyone else is running into this. The manual (TM9-803 and others) show the 11" Auto Wrench being used as a handle for the wheel hub socket. I have picked up several 11" wrenches including a Fairmount and others that are identical to those shown in the tool section of this site and have yet to find one that will fit the oval hole in the GP-17033 socket.

The picture in my SNL G-503 parts list shows a 11" wrench that appears to have handle reduced in thickness. Is the correct wrench something special?

I have at least two 11-inch auto wrenches that do fit the holes in the wrench and one of these has the 41-W-xxxx marked on it.

I have also seen wrenches with handles which have been milled down (if only by hand with a file) and have wondered if this was done for use as a hub wrench handle.

Also as for the Ford hub wrench; I have one and will check it out next time I am out at the shop.

The plated Fairmount wrenchs are most likely cadmium plated.

I had a chance to check out my Ford hub wrench and can report that it is marked exactly as the one shown above. It has a script "Ford" followed by "GP17033".

Why did I bump up this old post?

Because it does show how much the tool information has changed (improved!) since those early days.
For old times sake, if you wish.
It is a pity that the pictures are not visible anymore.
It is interesting to note how the original thread had been posted elsewhere, because there was not yet a tool forum!

Noteworthy, the suggested idea (Jim Gilmore)that war time wrenches soon stopped to be cadmium plated, while we now can read on alloy-artifacts site that a tell tale feature of war time manufacture is painted finish or.... cadmium plating!

WOW! That is really a good thread to be revived.
A bit sad, as it reminds me that John Barton is not with us any more, but full of interesting information.
The Ford Fairmount connection, for instance, which I have mentioned quite recently,is here in its original form by its original author,mr. Jim Gilmore(copyright).
Luke will love it!
Never forget nor disregard old threads, and be happy when they resurface from oblivion!
