Humvee noise

Postby Mark M. » Thu Sep 23, 2004 9:30 am

I have a humvee with 15k and with new fluids in every place that could be changed. While driving over 30 miles per hour I hear a ringing sound that sounds like a high pitch bell. Everyone that goes for a ride hears this. Is the the emergency brake? everything is tight. I cant pin point it. Any ideas??

Many thanks
Mark

Common problem. Look all along your exhaust system. There are heat shields in several places which are held on by 4 spot welds. These welds crack due to expansion and vibration and then the heat shield rattles with a loud ringing sound. Even if the weld looks ok it can still be cracked. Take a screw driver and pry between the pipe and the shield at every weld. You will immediately see the broken ones. To fix it right, reweld it and make the welds a little heavier. If you want to quiet it down temporarily just pry the broken weld away a little bit so when it vibrates it will not touch the pipe. This will get rid of the noise till you weld it. The poor mans fix is just rip the shield off and throw it away. Many people, myself included have found that after you reweld the shield back on, wrap 2 stainless hose clamps around the pipe and shield and tighten them up. They will dampen the resonant frequency of vibration and prevent the welds from breaking in the future.

i'm running with no top and i also hear a ringing noise, kind of a jingleing noise but only at certain speeds.30 to 40 mph
i discovered that it is the windshield frame whistleing in the wind.while driving, i ran my hand along the top edge and found i can stop the noise.
good luck

Ringing

The leak in your windshield will be noticable during the winter months. Last year I couldn't believe the water that leaked through the seal on the windshield frame. Brand new seal and windows, that is a military humvee, if you have a soft top alot of units started reinforcing the top with plywood under that canvass due to leakage seaping through. I went to slant top version to eliminate that problem only to find that the turret top leaks through the hinge. A little silicon sealant during the winter months and remember not to open the hatch and it is solved. The window frame is another story. Still leaks, but then again when it flooded and CHP had the roadway closed they let me go through, so a little give and take. Semper Fi.

leaky windshields

Postby Kurt Lesser » Mon Sep 27, 2004 2:16 pm

I went out and bought a calking gun and a tube of black silicon sealer at Home Defect and calked the bejesus out of the windshield. Removed both pieces of glass, layed in a sizable bead of sealer and replaced the glass. Now at least that doesn't leak! Never did have a problem with the top to frame seal in mine.

The only real solution for the tops is to make sure you have one of the GMACC heat sealed tops instead of the originals that were stitched together. I tried seam sealer and almost everything else I could think of without success on the stitched top. The velcro that attaches the rear cargo cover will never seal so don't even think about it unless you ever want to remove it.

As for the hardtop sieve, it's a good thing it's better at deflecting bullets than it is at deflecting water!!!

leaking

Postby Bootsy » Mon Sep 27, 2004 4:05 pm

On my hardtop slantback
i put foam tape along the windscreen (i had teh top off at th etime and put the wind sheild down ) and i also put foam tape on the top of the A pillar ( windsheild) then the hard top went on like a tight glove. the turret mmm
chalk gun and seal it up. also putting a little silicone when redoing the bolts in the turret help.
i have stopped all leaks from the turret
the main area of leaks is top of the slant back. drip drip drip drip
also put foam tape around the door area so the door seal matches up to the foam when the door is closed this will stop the water coming in through the door.

but remember you are driving a military vehicle they all leak.
if u dont wont a leaking car buy a normal car.LOL

roof leaks

Postby Action » Thu Sep 30, 2004 1:16 pm

I just went to the dealership and bought the rubber weatherstripping and retainer that mount between the windshield and roof. As for the bolts in the top, I I put windshield putty around the bolt between the washer and the top of the top. I haven't been in rain yet to test it, and the hatch and sponsons aren't on, so I know water will come in there. I put a thin bead of clear silicone on the frame before I set the glass assembly into place.

When I had the four man soft top on, you could see light through the stitching. I used the black liquid rubber used for dipping tool handles in. I brushed it over the sewn seems. It dried flat black and was completely waterproof. It also comes in clear.

window sealant

It is 3M Windo-Weld ribbon sealer, auto glass replacement kit. It is black and feels like used bubble gum or silly pitty. It can be torn and roller into a ball and then rolled out like dough. I rolled it 3/4" x 1/8" roughly, then wrapped it around the bolt at the washer before putting it in the hole. The excess squeezes out and can easily be cleaned up by pushing a ball of the stuff against the excess and it will stick together and pull right off. It rained last night and I don't see one drop inside the roof.

windshield sealer

Jason,

Is this stuff any easier to use than black silicon sealer in a calking gun? Since it's a putty, can you use a little bit and not have the rest harden up?
