New HMMWV Armor

A Patriot I know in Iraq sent me this picture of one of their armored HMMWVs.

That looks just like the HMMWV's that I saw being loaded aboard ship a couple of years ago, except that the ones I saw had the sponsons and the rear hatch installed. The left sponson had louvers in the side as if to be an air intake. Possibly it was an NBC air system. They did have an armored bulkhead behind and in between the rear seats which had a sliding steel door on it's top half. The doors had two dogs one high and one low to close the door instead of the usual pin and latch and the door hinges were the same. From this foto the roof on this one looks the same as well. It had no hatch on top and it had a lower steel roof with a filler which was about two inches thick, this looked to be poured in place like cement and then there was a wider top covering of steel. The way the side armor is made and the lower armor wraps around looks familiar too. It could be the same design armor with the sponsons removed. There was also an engine tach mounted up high on left side of the center windshield piller. Very cool and in my opinion they should have had more of these HMMWV's or at least retrofit kits sent over to Irac and Afganistan. George

It's my understanding that the tachometer is standard on the newest vehicles. It's made by Dixon Instruments and includes an hourmeter in addition to the tach. They occasionally come up on eBay, that's where I got mine. I haven't installed it yet because I haven't picked up a mounting bracket for it yet. I believe that a Sun tach housing would be a good mount after being painted green. I think it can use the tachometer pickup on the back of the engine block where a distributor would normally be on a gas engine.

The tach you speak of can be used in any new humvee with the EEC unit. The 4 pulse per rev 5 v. TTL signal is too low to drive a tach without the amp in the EEC. You can also by a separate amp for about 100.00 from Enterprise Engine Performance that will amplify the STE ICE RPM sender signal. You can also use the alternator driven tachs on any version humvee with the P signal output.

I thought I was the only one building roof racks for open tops. The one in the back ground. All though I am prejudiced I think mine looks much tougher. The truck with the armor looks overloaded as for as the suspension is concerned but I would imagine if you were driving the streets of Bagdad you would not really care about the suspention. The HMMWV was never ment to be an armored vehicle. I say they need to get our boys some better protection.
