if the lower half of the engine block has contours around the cylinder sleeves (which it should) then the conclusion drawn by Michael will be confirmed. And you wouldn't really need your glasses. Blocks before the war are commonly seen with water jacket only at the top of the cylinder around the combustion chamber. The contours of the cylinder skirts are seen.

Here is some intel on the differences between the CJ3a and the M38. http://www.cj3a.info/cj3a/m38cj3a.html. I believe the M38 (military) was produced between 1949-1952.I am not an expert on those year models but, I do not think it is military due to the windsheild and tailgate.

I'm pretty sure it's neither one. Windshield frame is CJ2-A, but of course that could have been changed. The CJ2-A bow storage pockets are absent, as well as the rear corner bow pockets, but that's common as well. I can see the hole in the dash where the keyed coil used to be, and the front of the frame has bumper gussets like a G503. I'm bettin' CJ2-A.

I see the serial number tag and the body number tag are both present on the firewall, have the owner get those numbers too. BW

my first thought was 3a, but I think it's a modified 2a. IIRC, the column shift accommodation on the dash was not present on 3a's.

dead giveaway on M38s is the presence of a lid on the cowl for the battery box. Carries over to M38a1 and the cover is fixed in place on early CJ5s.

That is a 2a windshield.

I think I can see where the top bow pockets at the rear corners were removed. It's pretty clean, but the corners are quite smooth enough for the pockets to have never been there. part of the forward bow pockets are still present, but modified.

The M38 had a tailgate, but that's very likely not one, if for no other reason than that it is WILLYS scripted, which M-series were not. The hood could be military. Can't see presence or absence or presence of a WILLYS script there.

There WERE civilian 2a's and 3b's bought by the Army. I have heard of 2a's and have owned a 3b.

There WERE civilian engines bought for replacements after the war, just like there were MILITARY engines and parts "bought back" from FORD AND WILLYS at the end and just after the contracts ended for G503 production.

There WERE parts applied at the factory, made by the other manufacturer, both at the very early and very late stages of war-time G503 production.

SOLENOID question, I need a 12 v replacement for the solenoid, where do I find it? Just realized this before I had autozone order one, they got the 6v.

Also good news! I think I got a buyer, this beast is going to Surrey!, fingers crossed

The solenoid isn't factory. Take the old one and compare to 1970's Ford truck. You need 3 total terminals, large battery on each side and a small terminal. Some have a second terminal, you can buy that, but you won't use it. The small terminal recieves power when you engage the "start position" on the 3-position key switch and activates the solenoid allowing battery current to pass through it.

Factory, the key only killed the circuit of the coil. There was a floor mounted starter button that served the purpose of the solenoid.

well I replaced the solenoid.... still a nogo, I'm going to try to bypass it / jump the starter just to figure out if it's the starter or not. I promised this fella a running GPW, I'm glad this popped up before it shipped.
