square nuts on GPW fender
While working on my '42 GPW fenders I found some screws being fastened with square nuts as on the attached picture.
Does someone know whether these nuts were loose or soldered to the fenders? If soldered, inside or outside of the engine compartment?

Hi Leszek,
I believe you have the inside but from the captive/cage nut. The cage is missing!

These are not caged nuts. They are too small.
Caged nuts were spot welded. In my case I see a splash of solder. I believe this is what it is on the attached picture. On the other hand it doesn't look like anything has been soldered there. Besides, the solder is inside the engine compartment, whilst the nut should be on the wheel side, hence my question.

Hi mate,
I see now- my eyes were out of perspective as to how small the nuts were.
Any chance of a bigger photo showing exactly where they were? The solder seems like a tinning point for part of the body grounding, but I cannot say i`ve seen little square nuts on the fender before in/on/as a factory fitting.

Hi Ian,
They are appr. 10 x 10 mm. I found them on the driver side fender in 2 locations as shown on a larger picture below. If you have a GPW and could take a look at your fender from the wheel side that would tell whether there are any square nuts and if so, if there are permanently attached to the fender.

I went and looked at my fathers 42 GPW and found the same type square nuts. Now I cant guarantee that they are original but they have been there for a long time. Hopefully more people can take a look for you to start to show a pattern with square nuts or without. Also that is nice surviving examples of the tinning that belongs at those points!

Thank you, TJ, for taking a look at your Dad's GPW.
So you also found square nuts there and some tinning. I am curious whether they are soldered to the fender or loose. I guess it is not easy to determine this without undoing the screws. I hope someone will let me know.

They are not soldered to the fender on any jeep. It's not meant to hold anything in place. The tinning is done prior to paint and masked off when painted. There are several more places that are tinned on the jeep.

Thanks again, TJ, for confirmation. That was my suspicion that these nut were not solder, but I wasn't sure. I also identified tin in some other places. I guess it was used to prevent from rust.

The wiring harness that goes from the 6-post up to the two-post is held with a bracket which is held to the fender with a round headed screw and a lock washer and square nut hold it to the fender. The "tinning" is to aid in radio suppression grounding. As in many cases, it appears some kind soul used a cut-off wheel or grinder to remove the head of the screw and to remove that wiring harness from the fender. In the meantime, the remainder of the screw and the nut stayed in the fender.
