What's a long time? Mine sits for at least three months without needing a charge before starting. Haven't tested it any longer.

Chuck Lutz wrote:NDT tires suck also but I think most guys who have changed their G503 to 12 volt still run NDTs.....Hmm...wonder why, standard tread tires are SO much better, right?
I can only answer for myself, but I like the NDT look better. :D

I think most people (including me) would prefer 6 volt for accuracy reasons. But doubling the voltage to 12 is undeniably an improvement.
An improvement and a convenience. Most people also use their jeeps as a tractor. When a vehicle is stuck in the yard, you grab the jeep. When a tree of bush needs to be pulled, you grab the jeep, When another vehicle needs a jump start, what do you do? You grab the Jeep if it is 12 volt.
If you want it to start better in the cold weather, 12 volt.
If you drive at night and want better lights, 12 volt.
If you want a more convenient battery to charge or be boosted by your other vehicle, 12 volt.
If you want to install an "off the shelf" cell phone charger, 12 volt.
If you just want the jeep running and don't yet have a 6 volt generator or regulator, what is the easiest way to get it going...... 12 volt.
If you are low on funds, often the cheapest way to go is...... 12 volt.

I like the look of the 6 volt battery, and the sound of a 6 volt starter. But when it comes to performance, the 12 volt wins in every category.

Actually, the Army conducted tests on the 12v conversion in 1942-1944 when it considered changing the jeep to 12v.

They decided to use the W5 & W7 12v conversion kits due to costs and lack of agreement between the various Army Boards on what was wanted.

There is a 7 page letter to the Army from the Willys-Overland's Chief Engineer, Delmar G Roos dated October 22, 1942 that detailed the changes involved including why they used 6v, the premise the vehicle was to replace the motorcycle, and the wide disagreement on what size of generator was needed and the compromises required.

I'm sure this come as no surprise...

For all those things...I have a F-250 460 cu in 4x4 pick up truck which is much better suited to do all those tasks. So I don't see a need to go 12 volt....remember, I ripped out the bubba 12-volt system in my jeep when I got it and went back to 6-volt.

If I wanted a 12-volt jeep I'd by a CJ-5 or something. Like Mark says, proper use of grounding straps makes a world of difference with your 6-volt jeep. If the difference is spending money to overhaul your 6-volt components vs. buying 12-volt ones...aside from properly cleaning and adjusting your regulator and putting in new bearings/bushing in your genny....the purist in me wins that battle every time.

Do you NEED 12-volt system? Sure if you are using your jeep like a tow truck or it hasn't been maintained and the components are trashed out....Or maybe some maintenance to the 6-volt components would suffice.

Its your jeep but to say the 12-volt set up is "better" is like what they say about "beauty"...its in the eye of the beholder.

These Jeeps started OK back in the 6 Volt years, PM and driver starting procedure skill were the key. Some never master when to choke, when to pump.

That is a very good idea, in cold climates particularly.
There is a simple valid reason, that some may not be aware of.

When using the starter, even in neutral clutch engaged, the flywheel is turning not only the engine BUT the clutch driven plate, transmission input shaft, counter gear, plus 2nd gear on the transmission output shaft & reverse idler gear. A lot of extra drag on a 6 volt system when oil is cold, thick & viscosity is high.

Understand how system parts interact with one another. GOOD parts can then be established & the NOT GOOD problem/s part/s isolated for repair or replacement.

They still should start as intended when maintained in good shape.

I always like 6v than 12v love the sound of the starter.
I know a lot on 6v as I make 6v led for everything and headlights also make resistor to charge phone, fright, TV, and many more. I also rebuild a lot of 6v generators, I know a couple tricks how to get 6v starter to start very quickly like 12v.
I also can make the original 6v seelite headlight bulbs into halogens which was event brighter.
Last night I went to have a look around all my ww2 military vehicles collection and count how many 6v and 12v.
The total vehicles on my collection Ww2 vehicles.
13 vehicles on 6volt
3 vehicles on 12volt
2 vehicles on 8volt

I also agreed with mark .
When starting alway put your foot on clutch for better start as well.
I seen many people starting without foot on clutch, it some time gearbox can slip into gear when starting.
I seen this before when I saw a few of my friends when we were going on a trip, he put on gear on nutural
Let his foot of the clutch and start and the gear slip back into gear itself while the engine is starting
It happen to me when I first time bought my first jeep and wc dodge first time start it with out cutch and gear stick slip into gear and now I using clutch for better starting and safety.

Thanks

Cheers Peter

rondo wrote:I can think of about 800 reasons to go 12v over 6volt actually.

1. I can move a one 12v battery between my other projects and don't need different batteries around.
2. spent about 349 bones to rebuild my genny and it never worked
3. maybe it was the voltage regulator, people want to charge what 400 bones to go thru it with core
4. a 1 wire alternator is 50 or less at any auto parts store in the country and if you need parts quick, you are in business

so let's recap, 1, 349, 50, and 400 equals 800

want to nitpick the numbers, go ahead. but what if ya have to find these 'original' parts to keep your jeep shiny original, which I have no problem with. but they are $$ and no guarantee they will work. back to square one.

I agree 12v is much easier to deal with and parts availability is a plus.

12v or 6v is really nothing considering the fact we are keeping these jeeps in the public eye and are not being forgotten in a field somewhere rotting away.
