Hey Matt,

Don't one of the guys from your Milwaukee vintage motorcycle club have a crated WLA engine? I ran into a guy from your club at Davenport selling one.

There is one in the High Desert Museum in OR. I am working with the curator to get the dimensions. Will post them here on a spreadsheet. Thanks for the moral support. I hope others can use this data too.

There are a few problems with the dimensions that I have from the HDM. The crate in the HDM has plexiglass in front, and the curator can't get exact dimensions for some of the interior parts, and I don't want to be a huge pest about this, but I think I have everything i need to draft some real close dimensions. He was unable to get anything close for the inside wood blocks, but the engine case itself has a few known dimensions such as the distance between the left and right side mounting holes, the difference in the height between the two engine mount shelves where the mounting holes are, and things like that. I have the width and height of my NOS carby box, so I can do a bid of reverse calculations to make this work.

Also the overall dimensions given (heigth 21.5", width 27.0", depth 15 1/2") included small portions of the front and rear panels which were sort of ripped off leaving pieces on the lower edge. Given the nominal thickness of those pieces at 3/4", I make the depth of the case without a front or back cover to be 14" I plan on building just the circumferential shell without a front or back panel, and then adding two pieces of plexi-glass as view windows. Those will make the case rigid.

The thickness of the top and bottom panels are each 3/4", so I subtract that from the total height to get the height of the side panels at 20 3/4".

I'll transfer this all to a spreadsheet, then make a list of materials. Give me a few weeks to sort it all out.

Here's a crated engine I photographed at the Wauseon, Ohio Antique Motorcycle rally a few years ago:

That sure looks great. Compared to the asking price today that is a steal. Thanks for posting. It will help

Next week I will begin the flywheel and connecting rod assembly process. I have everything gathered except the rollers for the connecting rod bearing as I need to mic the race, and I am awaiting a set of thrust washers in various sizes. They should be in before next wed.

Bill and I will mic and inspect everything to verify tolerances and bearing sizes. We'll spend a day working on that and then another time to assemble everything. Here are some images of the parts and as indicated in the manual. Everything is NOS except the flywheels and connecting rods are OEM Used. The .040 piston, the gear and sprocket side shafts are new US made. The bearings are .004 over, but I can use the races and order a set of correct sized US made roller bearings once we mic the race in the connecting rods.

COST UPDATE

So far I am at $3,852. This includes all parts purchased so far and price estimates for the few remaining parts. I have to send the cases out for installation of the bushings and that will add around $200 or so with shipping. I also have to figure an amount if my generator needs to be rebuilt.

I have been maintaining a spreadsheet, and as soon as I get the total costs entered I will post that data here including part name, number, qty and price. I estimate the entire project including wood, parts and materials for a crated 42WLA engine will run around $4200. I have seen a NOS blank boss engine sell for $4595 without generator, and rebuilt engines or various sorts around the $3500-4500 range. The standard 45 engine in unknown state with most of the parts sells in the $2500 +/- range. You probably have to add a few hundred to that to the worn get parts and other needed items.

It seems one could buy a nearly complete engine and stuff it in a crate for less, but this one will have nearly all NOS/OEM parts and the internals will be new, unworn and ready to run. It will be as close to an "engine in a crate" as I can get given the new asking price of the two I have discussed with sellers which are both asking $10,000. I can't imagine anyone paying that, so $4200 seems reasonable to me. Besides, I will have had a great time scouring the lands for the needed parts, will have learned much from working with Bill, and will have a nice addition for display at shows.
