So guys, time for an update.
The jeep has been having a rest since it moved to its new home and since ive been very busy with work. Fortunately I have free time again now so its time to start work on the jeep. I was concerned about leaving the motor sitting for so long but in theory it shouldn't have been much of an issue, I bought and fitted an exhaust, fitted a temporary fuel tank and set up a temporary 12v electric system, I span the motor over on the starter and only got 25psi on the oil pressure gauge, this seemed a bit low but I went for a start anyway.
The motor fired up quickly but ran pretty rough and wouldn't idle, after about 30 seconds of total running all of a sudden the motor smoothed out and it ran well. I think that a valve may have been stuck from the motor sitting around during winter for a couple of months. I was only getting 25psi on the oil pressure gauge though, no matter the engine rpm. This seemed odd as if it was an engine issue or pump issue I would expect the pressure to change a little bit depending on rpm but it didn't move at all as the following video shows:

I asked on the boards and John and I agreed that it was probably a gauge issue so I purchased a new gauge and retested the engine. It fired right up and the video below shows how it was:

Good oil pressure and no strange noises which was excellent, thermostat worked and temp got to around 140. I slowed the idle down and the engine ran as below, sounds a little 'tappety' to me perhaps up close?:

The only issue so far is an intermittent squeal from the front end that I traced to the camshaft plunger, pushing the timing chain cover got rid of the noise. I left the engine for a bit and then came back to it and I didn't get the squeal anymore so I'm hoping some oil has got behind the plunger and stopped the noise, I must not have greased the plunger when I fitted it; lets hope that the noise stays away otherwise I will have to investigate further, grrrr...
I tested out the clutch and it seemed to work fine, no strange noises, I then put the jeep in first and let it go forward a bit, seemed to work fine. I then put it into reverse and backed it up the slight incline into the garage, it pulled fine with no bogging and no strange noises from the transmission so all in all so far so good!

its settled down quickly, perhaps an issue with noise from the camshaft plunger but i'll see if it sorts itself out or now

Engine sounding great.Those little youtubes are neat.Beautiful job all around.
A suggestion...cover the air intake with a rag-clamped well- to keep debris from being sucked in.I used one of those red shop rags...it will also more closely provide the restriction which will be in place via the air cleaner setup.

Thanks Ralph, i'll put a rag over it next time I run it. I have to move on to finalising body positioning and hole drilling now, not really looking forward to it!

For those interested the jeep is currently running AN-7's however for normal use and longevity and reliability I will use Champion J8C's

Matt,running the AN 7 plugs is very cool ... you are getting the pure G503 experience! There is currently listed on the big auction site, a set of (4)...at a pretty high amount.

Upon installing, aren't the plugs considered "used, excellent condition" ?

Hi guys,
Continued work on the jeep and finally took the plunge and drilled the tub bolt holes, pretty scary stuff!
I lined the tub up as I wanted it and then marked where the holes would be drilled on the underside of the tub, I then removed the tub with the help of my wife and brother and stood it up on its end, a bit of drilling later and the tub was refitted to the frame, fortunately all the holes were in the correct place! The tub is all bolted on now and i'm very happy with it.
I found out that my brake pedal was rubbing on the tub but on close inspection it is down to the pedal shaft being bent by a tiny degree, almost invisible to see, I have taken it to the local forge and they are going to straighten it out for me and then hopefully that is the end of that!

Hi Guys,
Been working on some easy bits whilst i'm waiting for my brake pedal to come back from straightening. Interesting comparison of the change to the jeep, note the position of the pedals in their holes before the restoration work and the position now, the handbrake handle will be sprayed OD when things heat up a bit in the UK!
The data plate is the same data plate too!

Hi Nick,
They were little slotted screws, I cleaned them up and refitted them. A thing that might interest you on this GPW was that it had the bolts that go just inboard of the footsteps, I nearly overlooked them but just going over my photos and I remembered them, I shall drill the holes for those and fit them shortly

Glad to hear you put the correct slotted pan head screws back in Must have been the picture angle or my eyes that made them look like cross heads. Don't think i've seen bolts like that before in the steps. Maybe some one will chip in.

From what i've read on here these reinforcing bolts were fitted to some ACM tubs and MB's, you can see them on this GPW too

Also Nick where are you sourcing your hardware from in the UK, e.g these sort of little screws etc. Do you have any good sources?
