M-38 plucked from the weeds

Post by Ryan_M » Mon Sep 30, 2013 1:11 am

I picked up a '52 M38 yesterday. DoD 4/52. Appears to be converted to 12v, most of the fording stuff is gone. Motor turns freely but no spark so I'm pushing it around for now. Lots of rust but should clean up OK. Water pump boss number is "MC84560" so pretty good chance it's the original motor? Can anyone tell me if the head is correct? Were they non-ribbed like that? I have a CJ3A that I've spent the last two years rebuilding but I have a lot to learn about M38's. Any observations/input would be welcomed.

Nice jeep! The head looks like an MB head. The M38 heads have raised ribs. I can send you a picture and have a contact that will sell you an NOS one if you want.

Thanks for the offer but the head is the least of my worries at this point. Just trying to get the brakes replaced and somewhat safely drive-able. I'll need to take it slow through the turns as I'm not sure what's keeping the body attached to the frame aside from some rust cakes.

The good thing about having alot of old jeeps is,it makes it more difficult for your wife to tell when you bring another one home.

That particular Jeep was one of several used by the grounds crew by the University of Maine 40 years ago. It probably had a Fisher Snow Plow on it at one time. The operators were rough on the M-38's and the had a lot of down time. The enclosure was purchased surplus and added later. The Jeep was sold to a U of M instructor somewhere around the 80's who contracted a local roofing company to rebuild the rusted original body from the cowl back (note the door and wheel cutouts), There was a dispute over the cost and workmanship, the owner got it for less and still was not satisfied.

There may still be another one in the weeds somewhere on College Ave.
