Battery Box
My 1962 M170 has a home made battery tray and hold down and I am going to tackle putting it all back to stock.
My problem is I cannot find a picture in the parts books or the manuals that shows what is needed and how it is installed. A blowup showing the parts laid out as installed would be great.
Anyone have this info or know where I could locate it?
Thanks in Advance

Re: Battery Box
Still no luck with a picture showing the inside of a stock battery box and how the original battery trays are bolted into the battery box? I went through my parts books and all my maintainence books even my Canadian manuals did I miss something?
I did not find any detail pictures or diagrams. Anyone got any ideas where to look next?

Re: Battery Box
Dave,
I'm pretty sure that the older ORD-9 has the picture showing the drain tube layout. The drain tube orientation will determine how the trays mount. From foggy memory, looking from the front of the vehicle, the drain hole on the right tray is at the left front, the drain on the left tray is at the right rear. The intermediate length hose runs from the left tray to the tee. Short hose runs from right tray to tee. Long hose runs from tee, through cowl/firewall downward to drip.
I remember the drain parts being rarer than hen's teeth.

Re: Battery Box
There are three molded rubber tubes,680477, 680478, and 680479 plus a TEE 680687. I still have an NOS TEE in the spares for my M-38A1. The orientation of the trays and hoses is easy to decipher once they are laid out. 680479 is 24" long and exits thru the firewall toward the ground. There is a Bracket, 680301 that bolts between the lower front of the box and inner firewall. Two others, 680306 and 680307 attach the lower rear of the box to the dashboard.
The US Army motorpools normally scheduled removal of the batteries and trays in order to clean corrosion and repaint with a brushed on coat of a special Black Battery Box Paint. This was usually done annually by the driver oe a mechanic. I will post pics of the inner battery box of my Jeep next time I do the PM on the battery box.
A 1/2" Copper TEE will work in a pinch although it is a bit short ans 1/16" smaller in OD than the steel 680687. No hose clamps were used to attach or connect the hoses.

Re: Battery Box
And the battery boxes normally ended up with a coating of the GI Issue Black Battery Box Paint.

Re: Battery Box
I want to thank everyone who posted in answer to my question. I have none of the parts shown and will need to locate all of them for my 1962 M170. Anyone found a suitable replacement for the black battery tray paint.
Thanks

Re: Battery Box
Just quiz your local paint supplier for a battery acid resistant paint. POR 15 offers one as well.

Re: Battery Box
Some automotive supply stores sell a battery terminal paint, Whittaker had it in yellow color, another brand I used to buy was "CORRO-GUARD, by Rotanium, it came in a tall aerosol can and was black.. I am out of the black GI Issue battery box paint, or I would describe the label. Am sure it must still be in use by the military.
