gpw engine number

Postby a.mogel » Tue Jul 03, 2012 7:44 pm

Acquired a 42 gpw sn# 64652 frame and data plate match! engine number is 84652
I though this a bit odd that the engine would be 20,000 higher and only be out by the first digit of the frame number
delivery date matches the 64xxx sn#s did somebody goof ? data plates are original brass opinions please

Mogel,

I would say this is too coincidental. Carefully check the frame number and engine number to see if the 6 is really an 8 or the 8 is really a 6.

Good luck,

Donovan.

Numbers fill in with rust and paint and are hard to read; I bet a dollar to your doughnut that they are matching. Although I do believe in coincidence and it is possible that a worker grabbed the wrong stamp. I have had Mauser rifles that had one number mis-stamped for a bolt or trigger guard, and they were stamped using mechanically indexed stamps and rolls.

Does the raised boss where the serial number is stamped the FLAT kind or the STEPPED kind?

Chuck
I dislike taking over a post with a question.
What is the significance of the stepped versus flat serial number boss? I have an engine in my GPW with a stepped boss and no serial number stamped on it. The date clock is extremely hard to read but feel confident that it reads as a April 43 cast date. The GPW is a Feb 44 build, and feel it is a replacement engine. Will and can you enlighten me? Thanks
Regards
Bill

Take a picture of the serial number stamping on your block and post it please! The style of the numbers/letters stamped on it may show that the stamping was done on a replacement block by the mechanics, which could account for the one number being off.

Hi Bill...the change from a FLAT boss to the STEPPED style occured in October 42 and if the motor had a FLAT boss that would probably mean the number was 64582 because by 84582 they would definitely be using the STEPPED style at Ford.

I believe the order is something like this:
Flat boss, date wheel
Stepped boss, date wheel
Stepped boss, cast in (under dizzy) date....but the date wheel kept and the date not changed
Stepped boss, cast in date, no date wheel

Based on observations and what Tom W. has discovered.

Chuck,
Thanks for the info on the serial number boss. I understand that replacement Ford engines were unserialized and would/ should have had the frame serial put on the boss when it was installed in a GPW jeep. I'm sure what ever came out of the supply line was what was used no matter Ford or MB engine. I guess I should feel fortunate that my engine is a Ford with no serial number. It is still missing many things that makes it an all Ford engine.
I also read what Tom had to say on the subject on Horrocks post.
Thanks Again !

thanks but I believe it might be a replacement block -it appears to be an MB block no GPW cast number just above the
sump and the boss number is only stamped 84652 no gpw before it - all the head bolts, head and attaching parts are gpw mark ! I guess if this block didn't have a number someone at one time did stamp it in wrong and very poorly I'm sure as I get into this
jeep I'll be able to learn more
