Generator GEG 5002 green dataplate?

Postby Gustl » Tue Jun 12, 2012 1:28 pm

Hi guys!

Checking Robert de Ruyter´s site dataplate4u I see, that the 6V gennys had red dataplates, the 12V gennys green dataplates.

At some point of time my genny was painted OD. I wetsanded the dataplate carefully, expecting a red dataplate. But it´s green in slightly different shade to the OD painted genny.

The pic does not show it, but the shade of green is different to the OD of the genny.

Can you clean up the data plate and post EVERY one of the stampings on it or better yet, post a pic of the data plate once it can be read?

For the generator and regulator on the WWII units for Auto-Lite.

Red is 6v.
Green is 12v.
White is 24v.

I'm in no way a data plate expert, all I can say is, that my 6 volt generator had traces of green paint on the data plate - more or less same color as shown in Mark's second picture:

Carsten's genny tag is a generic one on which the voltage was STAMPED in and I suspect is a replacement or early copy since the number "1" is in the European style (serif), the one Mark posted has the voltage clearly marked on it from the factory and only the AMPERAGE is to be stamped in along with the model and serial number. They are two different data tags.

We can check Gusti's tag when a good closeup photo is posted to see if the stamps are of a European style or what Autolite used from the factory. Another reason I asked for that is I don't see a LETTER after what appears to be "GEG-5002" on the tag which would indicate to me that if the tag is a factory original, then the generator is a replacement which was available without a pulley on it....which is what the letter than follows the "5002" would stand for to tell you which vehicle it was for. Without the letter, the generator itself (without the pulley) can be used for more than one vehicle.

In addition, the serial number may give us a clue as to the DATE this one was produced. I do not know if replacement gennys from Autolite without a pulley were available with a RED tag or if a GREEN one was used.

2Y should be February 1944?

I would have to say the tag is original, and that "2Y" would probably indicate it was a Feb 1944 production date. Now since the "GEG-5002" is without a letter designation after the "5002" I am of the opinion it is a replacement for more than one application and that may be why it was painted GREEN if in fact that is the original paint color from the factory.

Chuck:
Your theory would correlate with the fact, that the generator is part of my 53 Maltournée rebuilt jeep. So the french army just took spare parts from the US shelf...

Thanks! This dataplate will stay green and will not be restored to red. 8)
