Sleeve generator brace WO-A-1470 sourcing question

Postby Gustl » Mon Jun 11, 2012 1:33 pm

Hi guys!

While completing the T84 and TC I do some hardware fixing at the generator brace. Most of it is replacing metric to standard bolts.

Working on the generator mounting hardware I found a 2009 thread discussing the A-1470 sleeve. See this thread:
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=126669&hilit=generator+brace+sleeve

It´s kind of difficult to source a sleeve with correct measurements or drilling a hole of 7,7 mm in a pipe of OD 11,15 mm without consulting a machine shop here in Europe.

I would rather like to buy the correct sleeve. Has any of you Gee members got a sourcing address or leftovers from fitting your homemade sleeve?

Any help very appreciated!

You might check a good hardware store for some sleeves. My GPW windshield had been drilled for an oversize hand wiper so I found a sleeve that had an ID that was just a little larger than the shaft of the wiper and a snug fit into the two holes in the upper rail on the inner windshield frame. I then ground them to a length that was slightly longer than the upper rail was thick and installed them with no problem.

You might find the same kind of steel "sleeves" in a metric size that would work on an SAE genny bolt.

It only takes a few moments for a machinist to take a 3 or 4" of 7/16" diameter cold rolled round stock, chuck it in a lathe, run a drill 21/64" bit thru it with the tailstock and face off enough of these A-1470 Bushings to 0.406" long to sell to your fellow G-503'ers to get your investment back. Did you try Ron or the other Jeep parts dealers. I looked for my extras that I made a few years back and cannot find them, they are somewhere strung on a piece of wire.

@ Chuck and Joel:

I checked with my local hardware store today, went through all sleeves and pipes they had. The closest material was a copper pipe, two meters long... Don´t think that copper is strong enough. And the ID was way to wide anyway. Definitely was the wrong store.

Joel, I know that you are a good machinist. My dad owns a lathe, but he is 82 years old and I don´t want to stess him, need to wait for the right moment to ask him.

Just thought it would be easier if one of you fellow Gee members could put one in an envelope.

So my search will continue. The jeep had existed probably the last 20 years w/o it, so it will do it for a while...

But - as always - thanks for your efforts and advice, appreciate very much! 8)

Hi Gusti,

I may know where you could get a bushing from :D I got one a couple of years ago here in the UK, not too sure if he has any more. Just send them an email, it's worth a try.

I've just made one of these for my own Jeep, plus a couple of extras to use up the bar. Even got them cadmium plated too!

I can send you one if you like?

Gusti...maybe a heavy truck supply house or industrial supplier would have some STEEL fuel lines or hydraulic lines you could use? Just cut off the length you need and make about a handful of others for spares/swapping/Christmas presents?

Save a ton of Euros on shipping, machining, etc.

I can have a quantity made at the local machine shop. Padded mailer to Europe is very cheap thru Air Mail.

Dave: I sent them a mail the day I saw your post. No answer yet.

Meanwhile our fellow Gee member Leigh offered me to send me the sleeve. I really appreciate his offer and am very thankfull :D

Also best thanks to Joel for his offer and for Chuck´s suggestions.

Really appreciate this community. Hope I can contribute to this forum also a bit in future, once I have more hands on experience and I am a bit more knowledgeable...
