oil filter canister leak

The red arrows show where the oil is coming from and the yellow box shows a bead of oil coming from the canister. It is not coming from the hose to housing fitting. When the oil gets hot and thins out it makes a mess under the hood when the fan sprays it all over. From what I can tell the fitting that the hose screws into is pressed into the oil filter housing and there is no way of tightening it. Has anyone had this problem before and if so how did you fix it? Thank you.

Remove the canister and clean it in and out.
You might find pitting inside.
The fitting needs to be brazed onto the canister, and if there is pitting inside it should be filled with lead or braze as well.

May be more reliable or economical to replace the body with a good one. Fram or Purolator?

Purolator has name stamped on cover, can you post a pic?

I had the same problem with that, and holes from pits; I soldered them up, then got a new one as i didn't trust it. But, if it is only leaking around the fitting and is solid elsewhere, easy to fix.

Check to see if there is a crack in the threads of the Oil Filter Inlet.

Tried to upload photo of oil filter canister but surface zero not working right now. The only words on top are "military standard filter".

What wrench size is the cover bolt, Fram and Purolater are different, Fram is 3/4".

FRAM canisters are FRAM canisters.....Purolator are different...
Fram covers are PEAKED....Purolator are DOMED...

The covers are interchangable...

If you know what your jeep came with you can replace the canister with the correct one and at the same time get the correct cover to match it if you are so inclined. In other words, the size of the NUT on the cover bolt is no indication of who made the canister.

I have NOS WWII Issue Military Junior Fram and Purolator oil filters in the spares for my MV's, the Purolator has a 7/8" Bolt Head, the Fram has a 3/4" Bolt head. The covers will interchange tho. :wink:

Sounds like Fram. Does the bottom of the cannister have radial grooves, or is it smooth?
