Money is always a concern for DWI checkpoints. Police use special funds to pay for the enforcement effort. W/o that money it wouldn't occur...

Small towns use it not to fund the enforcement effort, but to fund most of the city budget. In a way, they are like modern day privateers. My wife works for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. She is a construction inspector, but up until a few years ago, she wore a badge and was a park ranger for the lands along the Mississippi River. One night on the way back from the Muny Opera in St. Louis, we got caught in a DWI trap. Traffic was backed up on a small 2 lane highway for some distance. After some considerable time, we got near the front and she started blowing the horn and yelling at the deputies and State patrolmen out her window to hurry up. Naturally, this got their immediate attention. A patrolman stepped up to her window and asked what her problem was and she asked how long they intended to back up traffic on a U.S. highway. The patrolman said as long as it took to get the drunks off the road. She then informed them that such and such a legal code under title whatever said that traffic at a random check point was not to back up traffic on a U.S. highway over a certain number of minutes and that we intended to drive around them if they did not start letting people past. A huddle ensued and then traffic was allowed to move with only random people pulled over. This was a couple of years ago, and while the same checkpoint is frequently used, they no longer stop every car if it starts to back up traffic.

Chuck has a good point, the very existence of this Forum is in doubt because of the slant it's recently been given towards Sex in/out of Religion, Muslims Vs Christians, Black Vs White, Economics (Usually Politically slanted and the general BS pertaining to it.) Troll posting with the hope to getting a rise out of other members, ..especially State Vs State...Personal attacks abounding..And .....News Bites..if we want those, we'd read a newspaper or go to a News Website..
If you want it G O N E.. just keep it up guys, ( you know who you are) the days of this Board are numbered. And a great shame that would be too.

Now that I think on it, I think I've only ever seen one DUI random stop in my life, and I've driven more roads than some (and in all 50 states)...

Crest over a hill on a Friday night and you are likely to see one of the VICPOL buses operating at the bottom of the hill. You won't have a chance to turn around and run. there are Police Bikes set up in cover, just in case.

You'll cruise down, and the road will be controlled by Police, who will pick out a random selection of drivers. No profiling of course. Hundreds will be tested over a few hours. the Lab equipment on board can do Drug and Alcohol testing. they will also check you licence, your tags, and your carry if you interest them.

The morning after, there will be a number of cars on the side of the road, owned by drivers who failed. They have had to 'escort the police officer to the local station' for further testing. They don't pass go, and do not get 200$.

I have been pulled over, on average, 4-5 times a year. knowing that they are there are certainly been a factor in the drop in Drink -Driving (DUI).

In NSW recently I was pulled over 3 times in one day & randomly tested. On a trunk road with no real by pass near where I live there is regularly a random testing station, early morning, when the tradies are going to work. Do they catch any?
You bet hungover bods from the night before or the football parties.
NSW Blues v/s the Qld Reds tonight bet the cops will be there tonight & tomorrow morning. They will bag a few no doubt, pun intended.
