Reg number for halftrack

Postby Recon36th » Mon Apr 23, 2012 7:19 pm

Hi guys, question for you. I have a M3A1, SN M3A1-48121. The data plate says it was a M3A1 75GMC remanufactured to the M3A1 Personnel Carrier. What would the registration number be? Would it keep the original reg number or would it of got a new one?

Thanks,

You might be lucky and the hood number might be stamped on the front bumper. It would be near the passenger side frame rail. ALso you can be sure it was a M3-75 by looking for the Frame number which will be behind the driver's side front wheel. There will be a scratched out number above the serial number, M3A1-xxxx. I hope that helps.

You can also try looking at the passenger side bogie frame below the top roller.

The reg# should have been retained from the original M3-75 configuration. Can you read the original frame stamping M3-75xxxx? Converted to M3A1 around Jan'y 45. You might post this to the halftrack sticky at the beginning of the tracked section. Joe D. may have some additional insight on this and he often checks that thread.

Thanks guys. The track lives on a friends ranch, so the next time I'm out there I will check those things and report back.

Matthew, Autocar converted 1247 M3-75 GMCs to M3A1s on Production Order T-13054. These were accepted as new M3A1s for purposes of production. New serial numbers were assigned ( 47636 thru 48882) & stamped on the frame. From talking to a few owners, the old M3-75 S/Ns that were originally stamped on the frame were X'ed out. However, the original M3-75 USA Numbers were retained & used. Unfortunately, what this means is that there is no math formula from which to derive the USA Number from a known Serial Number. Autocar kept a list of the serial numbers & corresponding USA Numbers of each unit they converted, but the one I have seen only goes up to 48088. There may be a complete list out there somewhere, maybe old Autocar files? In the meantime, hope you can find the USA Number in the places the guys suggested. If not, if the X'd out M3-75 serial number is stamped on the frame, you might try to do something to decipher the numbers under the X's. Does the dataplate ID the Manufacturer as Autocar? Could you take a photo of it next time you see the track?

Good luck,

Joe

Hey Joe and David,

Thanks for the post's. My track is a White, but the data plate says Autocar rebuilt it. I will get photos on Wednesday and post them as soon as I can. The track is far from done, but is looking pretty good. Thanks again for all the support you guys give, it really helps. Sometimes I just want to sell her and get GPA, but it is really cool to drive up somewhere and see the peoples reaction to her, priceless.......
