the two rubber washers for the air intake tube elbow bolts are missing or torn allowing the rain to enter the engine as it drip through the hood seam directly above.

Have you checked the STE/ICE tachoimeter sender mounted on the back of the block where a distributor would be in a normal car? On some of the CUCVs there is a vacuum generator plugged into that hole. It's a direct shot into the crankcase and if the O rings were broken any water running down the valley could get channelled into the engine.

After smoking the crankcase through the dipstick, driverside head gasket 3" from the back shows smoke about 1.5" wide. Calling the machine shop this morning. Anyone ever had success pulling a head in the vehicle? Looks like a hernia to me!!!

Can be done in the truck, whole day job.

You just need to ask yourself if its worth pulling to go through everything at one time, or just fix what you think is the only issue.

If I had time, it would be worth it to pull the motor, and do both heads, inpect cylinder bores, crank, and mains ect...

Looks like you want to make sure you buy new head bolts too.

The valley side of the heads is not within the combustion chamber; this is where the push rods pass thru, so a crack or fault in the head gasket in this area will also not show any driveability issues but would be a good place for water to drain into the engine from the valley.

So, do I win a cigar?

NICELY DONE, DAVID! Is this something that happened to you? All the things I was trying to come up with, and this did not even occur to me. There just doesn't seem to be any reason a gasket should give up there, except that they are very thin at that point, I guess. Again, kudos!

Nothing I ever experienced Brian. Just an observation based on my Love/Hate relationship with GM diesel dating back to the late 80s. Having owned and maintained several GM diesel equipped vehicles, as well as 2 H1s and a HMMWV in years past, and having recently done a major on my 99 K3500, I have very timely and intimate knowledge of the area in question.

I'm guessing the heads may have been replaced before. I can easily see that portion of the gasket getting FUBARred during an in-situ head replacement. Those heads are heavy SoBs and it takes a combination of carnival contortionism and brute force with a touch of delicate finesse to get them properly in place. Of course, a long litany of cuss words and profane metaphors, that would embarass a squad of Marines, is equally helpful.
