WWII Camo net Burlap Rolls- getting them and dyeing them.

Postby johnseidts » Mon Apr 23, 2012 7:33 am

I have found a 36' X 44' camo net unissued which needs burlap applied. I haven't had luck finding the burlap rolls except in un-dyed raw burlap. I went to Numrich Arms website but couldn't find the rolls there any more. Does anybody have a source for green and brown burlap rolls? If not, has anybody had any luck dyeing the raw burlap strip rolls to proper color?

FYI, I read in a 1943 TO&E list from WWII that the nets are officially called net, camouflage, cotton shrimp. I never knew that.

I bought a couple of rolls of colored burlap from Sportsmans Guide a couple of years ago. You may have some luck there.

Rich,
Nothing turned up in a Sportsman's guide on-line catalogue search, but thanks for the tip.

Farrell,
I will call them and see if they ship. If they don't, could I trouble you to pick some up and ship them to me? Thanks for the tip!

I think one of each green, brown and black should get you done. They are large rolls.

Farrell,
I have the 36' X 44' net, CCKW size. Tht works out to 1584 square feet (sf) of surface area. 2" X 100 yards is 50 sf. Two rolls would only cover 3.1% of the net. I think I need at least a third of the surface scattered and random to make it work. So I think I need 8-10 rolls. I'd like to know if there is a more appropriate calculation, though. I'll PM you later tonight about this.

From the TM 5-20:

A lot of scrim and a lot of man-hours for that net. I have one and am dreading the day that I get around to garnishing it!

Found the reference

I found a 1944 copy of FM 5-20 on the internet. Here is the section with instructions for doing the shrimp nets:
http://cryptome.org/cartome/fm5-20-ch4.htm

According to this, I need 13-20 rolls to do a 36' X 44' net.

I picked up a couple rolls for about $10-12 at Command Post army surplus in Houston. That was a few years ago, and it seems like I went back since and they were out. I would give them a call though.

Something to think about, if your net will just be a hood ornament (literally), consider just scrimming a smaller section that will show when rolled up.

If I didn't want to set up my 36'x44', I would do that. But I'm short about 15 rolls!

A friend had a garnished 20'x20' net, and it had both burlap and canvas. Would canvas be any cheaper to get? I honestly haven't priced it yet.

Hey gents,

I was at a crafts stor called Joan's Fabrics and they carry sheets of colored burlap. They have green, brown, black and tan. They can be easily cut into strips and used as camo.
