How much does a slantback/turret weight?

Postby icentropy » Mon Apr 16, 2012 5:29 pm

Just curious, does anyone know how much a slantback top/turret weights? Basically curious as to how much more my truck would weight with a slantback setup vs the regular HMMWV softtop?

Hi Ice,

an M998 curb weight is 7,700lbs and an M1025 is 8,200lbs.
There is some basic armour, X-doors and brackety in an M1026 that isn't in an M998, so if you allow ~100 lbs for that you get an approximate weight for the roof, turret, hatch and sponsons of 400lbs.

Cheers

My -10 says the M-998's curb weight is 5,200 and the M-1025 is 5,960 giving a 760 lb difference?

I think you are using gross weights.

Are the X-doors that much lighter than the standard up armored doors? My uparmored doors are hella-heavy.

From having moved a slant back setup around in my garage a few times, I think your weight is closer to the actual weight. I must ad that my top had a double layer of the steel skin on the main roof panel so maybe there are some lighter ones around.

There is the single and double layer roof, and sponsons, along with rear hatch .....I've had both......I like the single, as I do most of this stuff on my own.

Yes, X doors are waaay lighter than the supplemental armoured doors. But as a result they are much weaker and flex more.

Hmmm, I may have to check them out. I'm kinda sick of the weight of the up armored doors. Here in so cal i often want to take them off. With the soft doors i could take them off daily if i wanted depending on the weather. With the uparmored doors, I'm just too darn lazy to pull them off on a nice day. :D

I'm picking up Greg's slantback kit on Sunday!!! So I hope you guys will forgive my future hundred upcoming questions as i try to figure out how to correctly assemble and mount this thing. I've heard that if it isn't done right the leaking and rattling is much much worse than if it's sealed and assembled correctly. I'm very excited to get going.

Well Sunday I'm going to pick up my new slantback kit! Can't wait. I hope it's not too heavy as i'd hate to lose too much ride height on my truck. (being a Hummer i have progressive rear springs) If they sag too much i'll have to either swap them out or install spacers to bring the butt back up. :D
