A-980 Companion Flange Nut (Internal Style EBrake)
A-980 Companion Flange Nut (Spicer No. 145-W)
What size is this nut?
I'm ready to find out exactly what I need to get my EBrake operational but this bad boy is in my way. The parts list wasn't much more specific than the name and part number of course, the manual didn't specifiy either. I did it search but didn't really find much.
I don't have a rachet large enough, I'd prefer picking up the right one the first time
(Dead Center holding on the yoke)

I can check in AM, they are on my shelf. They are 1-1/4" across. 1-1/4" Socket.

You are quite right Ben on the size, and it would be better and cheaper to buy the 1/2" drive type
I have just fitted one like this - however I did find that my socket did not go in deep enough as the flange prevents it, and with the chamfer lead into the socket, I thought that it might slip off.
I modified the socket by thinning down the lip of the socket a little until it seated properly (using a grinderette and 50grit sanding disc)
It also came in when I replaced the pinion oil seals, as they have a similar type of flange
You might also buy a long handled 1/2" drive wrench to make the job easier. they come in useful for lots of jobs.
"You can never have enough tools," my Grandad used to say "and buy the best you can afford, as the quality will remain long after the price is forgotten"

Thin wall sockets are available, shop around. I have them in 1/2" and 3/4" drive and prefer to use 3/4" drive when I cannot use my impact wrench.

And do not be too proud to improvise, a pipe wrench on the yoke of the front output shaft will come in real handy. Every good mechanic has a few pipe wrenches. 18" Pipe Wrench is a good choice.

Pipe wrench worked really well at keeping that drum from spinning like crazy. Unfortunately that bolt has the strength of Atlas!
Some serious pulling and half a can of penetrating oil later it's still holding fast. Any other tricks of the trade to get this tough nut cracked?

Assuming the Jeep is on the ground, remove the pipe wrench and brace the socket wrench so that you can put the jeep in gear and step on the starter. Study whether it is 1st or reverse that is needed to get the nut to back off. Be sure that no one is in the way should the wrench fly off.

You can also use a piece of pipe as a cheater over the breaker bar or ratchet handle. I use a a 1 footer for nuts like that one, all the way up to a 5 footer on my 3/4 drive for track adjustments. I'm old, and not very strong anymore.

If the gearbox is in the jeep the space under it does not always allow long handles, and a mechanic has to draw on his bag of tricks.
