Correct parts to Use

Postby TheHummerguy » Thu Mar 15, 2012 12:18 pm

Well...the engine I was given to install in the truck I am doing the 6.5NA,4L80E,242 T/C upgrade in is a POS...the Ebay seller made it look real puurddie on the outside but the Cylinder walls had previously been rusted...but he was kind enough to Hone them....Freakin' Moron.

So off to Buy a New Long Block with new Block and heads...the new Motor is as Much to rebuild the old.
I made several calls to rebuilders and they all want close to 4k for a full rebuild....several don't want to do it at all....go figure.
anyway....Here is the question.

Can I use the Injector lines from the 6.2 on the 6.5?

The angle that the injectors are at in relation to the head are different between the 6.2 and 6.5's. There are only a couple of years of Production from Chevy, GMC and AMG that used the DB2 in the 6.5 so those lines are not super easy to find. Chevy and GMC sold a lot of those vehicles though so they are around. The injector line fitting size at the IP on the DS4's is different so you can't use lines from the later 6.5's. You might be able to bend the lines that you have to make them work.

Hi Steve,

The correct answer is "No you can't"
The reason is that there are different line I.D.'s depending on IP and injectors to get the right "pop off" conditions.

Now having said all that, when I put 6.5 heads on my truck after I found a crack between valve seats a few years ago, I didn't have 6.5 lines lying around, so I carefully bent my 6.2 lines and fitted them up.
The engine runs fine.

BTW can you do us a favour and name the eBay seller so no one else gets a bad experience....

Cheers

Thanks guys....the Seller is/was "Crankycrankshaft" I'll post some pics later on.....looks like this motor sat out and got wet, then they got it, tore into it, replaced all the gaskets, honed and reassembled....the Injector nozzle ends were wire brushed or rusted. Plus one threaded end is all chewed up and would have leaked like hell.

I found the answer in the the TM....can't use the Lines....soooooo

I need a new IJ Pump too, the TPS uses a keyway, the Pump I have has the old plastic cam...if I could get that replaced or machined down correctly I think I could use this pump...but this pump goes to the Bad engine and will most likely get returned...so I need Lines,IJ Pump and 8 Injectors....I show the correct pump as a DB2831-5149 and the Injectors as 10233972

Heres another question....is tue NA long block the same as a turbo long block?
If i go turbo what needs to be mod'd on the body...dog house area.
I have a turbo motor complete in the can so i can use al the parts from that minus tye block and heads.

As for the body, with a turbo, you will need a different doghouse, a 1/2" body lift, and the tunnel around the body will need to be trimmed back. Maybe more things done?

Hi Steve,
As I understand it,the blocks are the same, but there are some slight differencesin the machining.

For example, the turbo motor has a small oil feed hole drilled and tapped into the oil galleries in the valley at the rear of the block. NA's don't have this.

Turbo's have oil cooled pistons NA's do not. I''m not sure if this causes machining differences to the block though.

Cheers

For the price of the rebuild you could pay another thousand and have a NA P400, or pay more for a turbo P400 not sure what they're worth

One of Ted's HMMWV builds was a turbo conversion I believe. He had a number of nice photos posted on another thread of the mods to the tunnel area that were needed. Might help you get an idea of what needs to be done.

Thank Ted...I'm gonna need those pics....
Client has decided to go turbo, we are going to use my gov liq 6.5 TD....I pulled the oil pan on it and the motor inside looks brand new...she is mint...I did find 2in of the end of the oil dip stick broken off and stuck on the oil pump inlet screen....weird.
The engine turns but then stops....I am thinking a broken valve...so need to remove the heads. I'm going to send the motor out for rebuild.
Now....I need everything for a turbo setup...all the serpentine stuff and anything else you all can come up with.
I need a 200amp gen and brackets....so if anyone has the parts I need please pm me with prices, the motor I have is complete ij pump, lines, injectors, turbo, waste gate, exhaust manifolds etc....the left and right turbo inlet tubes are bent so I will need those....the search is on...again
