L134 wanted for a 1951 CJ-3A

Postby 1000Fuss » Sat Mar 10, 2012 4:43 am

I am looking for a running L134 with no cracks etc. in the block for a 1951 CJ-3A.

I bought the CJ from a swiss farmer who installed a Nissan engine into the car! He drove milk from the farm in the mountains to the milk pick up in the valley with the CJ.
Within the next 2 years I will get the CJ pack into its original condition. But, unfortunately L134 engines are very rare over here in Europe.

Could anyone help?

I would organize a carrier to pick up the engine and do the shipping etc. All I would ask for is to build a wooden box around the engine for save transportation.

Cheers,

Bodo

Where are you and what is the serial range of your CJ3A.

I have engine 3J122186 from my 1951 CJ3A that I removed as a running engine 10 years ago.

I have made no decision but am considering selling it to raise funds to rebuild my MB engine.

The CJ-3A has SN 451-GB1-31627 and is from 1951.

Does your 3J spare engine have cracks/leaks etc.? Can you provide pictures? Can you give me a price indication?

I am living in Frankfurt/Germany. There are carriers that collect shipping goods locally in the US and bundle them in containers for shipment overseas.

I will be in Oklahoma and Texas for a few weeks but when I return home I will pull the head and take measurements and photos.

It did blow a head gasket around cylinder #3 20 years ago and the head gasket was replaced and cured it.

Until I see what condition it is in I really can't set a fair price. If it has no cracks, and does not need to be sleeved, I would be asking $750 (Which is what I paid for an MB block needing total rebuild)

Honestly at that price if you don't care about originality or correct date engine you would be better buying a gen set engine from Brent Mullins for $900. Mine would only be worth it to you if you need matching date.

I will try to find the original serial # for the Jeep I removed it from today.

I will be patient until you return :)

I'd planned to match VIN and engine date as close as possible to restore the car to its original state.

Thx for looking into it!

Don't be too concerned with matching engine to jeep sn. It wasn't done and it could be a big gap in there as the engines were put into a holding area and then pulled out. First in could be last out depending on how lines were run. Close could be 10k difference.

Hi Steve,

you have to see the options I have:

The spare and used parts dealers over here want a lot of money for replacement engines. And, old jeeps are very rare here, barn finds do not exist. Currently the only engine available at an acceptable price is a industrial engine out of PE-95k from Luxemburg. But with this one I need to change parts to turn the engine into a regular one that would work in my CJ3A.

Unfortunately, some of the folks selling engines on Ebay do not want their engines to be shipped to Europe, even though I am taking care of the shipment costs. Seems like a american pride issue.

Cheers, Bodo

It's probably more of a Customs hassle issue. I know it's probably not a big deal, but many people just avoid international sales, myself included. But I feel your pain. I am in the states and looking for a good L-134 runner, for the last month. Good luck with your resto.
