CMP Question

Novice question: Looking to get an M1 grand from CMP program. Looking for a solid operational Grand, but with the 'Old" look.
Which model or grade do you suggest? I would love to get an actual WW II grande but dont think they are still available??

Hi Tom, I have bought several M1 Garands,M1 Carbines,and 1903 Springfields from the CMP. They are good decent guns and function well. Most Garands have WWII receivers but have been rebarreled with postwar barrels and all have newer rear sights. Reproduction rear sights are available and look and function great.Order one of their catalogs @ odcmp.org. They also have matches in various parts of the country and most times have rifles there for sale.Another good source for Garands is on Gunbroker.com Hope this helps,Sincerely Ed S.

I have a Garand and Carbine both from CMP and I think you get better than what they grade them at. Unless you go and can hand pick them I don't believe you can specify anything except for the description they give for each grade. I wanted shooters so wasn't worried about getting a high dollar collectible and letting it sit. Best deal going in my opinion.

..just got my fifth service grade M1, paid $629 total which included a hard case, only took 3 weeks, FedEx delivered, Springfield, ser# 203XXX(pre war), 56 dated barrel which gauge 1 and 3, Walnut Stock (Sweet, KW, which I soaked in kero and used 0000 steel wool as a light scrub), with LOTS of W.R.A parts....which I replaced with Fulton Armory and Num's original parts....sold the W.R.A. on the Bay...ended up at $395.67 total for one H...ECK of a prize....want a great Garand, CMP is the way...oh, 3 other buys we're WWII receivers.....

If you cant get to a store to handpick the best thing to do to get a WWII reciver and USGI wood is order a Field Grade
That being said the field Grades are rougher than the Service Grades but "most" not all of the SG are post war and alot of them come with new commercial wood.
You will not get a rifle with all WWII parts. You can attach a request with your order for WWII reciver and USGI wood. Doesnt mean you will get it but doesnt hurt to ask

I have ordered 8 M1 Garands and 7 were WW2 era, and one was pre war. Two came with 44 dated barrels and two with type II lock bar sights. All from the "Field Grade" selection You will not be disappointed with whatever grade you chose. They are all excellent rifles.

I have had the same experience as Mr. Fox. If you would like a real nice, and free, Garand buy 10 of them from the CMP, cherry pick the best and the best parts then sell the other 9 to break even.

I have bought a 1943 M1 (with 1943 dated bbl) and a scant stock, finger groove M1903, which I was very pleased with. I also have an M1 carbine, purchased from the DCM (pre CMP) in 1961. I have a Korean "Blue Sky" M1 and I just replaced the Birch stock with a new stock set from CMP. Great price on the stock set and very pretty American Black Walnut. To purchase from CMP you must belong to a CMP recognized club. I joined The M1 Garand Collectors club for 20 bucks and that was enough to qualify. You can also join a high power rifle club at your local shooting range.

Club membership is only part of the qualifications. The Garand Collectors Club is $25 per year ,there are cheaper alternatives.
You must also fullfill firearms handling portion of qualifications in order to purchase rifles from CMP

A DD-214 will do it as well as a valid CCW, besides the club. An NRA handgun safety training certificate would probably work as well.
