Air Force Street Sweepers - 1940's

Postby DavidA » Tue Feb 07, 2012 9:33 pm

Here is an undated photo of Hickam AFB street sweeper and a group of USA(C?) sweepers. Looks like they were taken at the Austin Western plant.

Runway clearing for foreign object damage I suppose.

The TH puzzled me until I realised that it was still a territory, rather than a state.

You betcha! That would be a cool sight at the "opening" of the museum every morning the sweepers hitting the ramp before air ops start! :D

Oh trust me I know a few time we AF types did that PLUS using brooms to sweep off snow from wings in the "balmy" areas we were at.

These were a high maintenance machine, lots of gearboxes, chains, drive shafts and rotary brooms to maintain, when these types were turned in for disposal, they usually were well worn out. The old time surplus dealers that may have had machines have long disappeared. "Rock and Dirt" used to list these back in the 50's, 60's.
