WC51 Questions

Postby Tinwoodsman » Sun Feb 12, 2012 9:51 pm

I am new to this forum and have a couple of questions on the WC51. First, do the WC51 and the M37 share the same type of engine, tranny and transfer case? Second, does anyone have a source for WC51 canvas?

Thanks,

Ok-
The M-37 & WC-51 share the same style engine, an inline 6 cylinder, 230 cid Dodge truck engine. However, the correct one for a WC has an engine number starting with T-214, while it is a different number for M-37

Trannys are different

WC-51 has a Single Speed transfer case: M-37 has a two speed, based on the WC-63 transfer case, so they are not the same: Also, the output for the rear driveshaft on the WC is CENTERED, so the differential center member is in the middle. The M-37 has its rear output OFFSET to the right, which also offsets the rear differential, so they are not interchangable.

Source for WC canvas: (Don't know where you are) In the USA, (they do ship overseas) The VERY BEST source for canvas is Beachwood Canvas Inc., in NJ. Excellent quality, good workmanship, and well worth the money. And a full set for the WC is in the $2-3k range, based on needs... I HIGHLY recommend them- In my(and many other's )opinion, They are THE BEST.

Have you been to the Dodge Forum?http://forum.ww2dodge.com/index.php Great website, lots of dodge knowledgeable people.

You should also look at New Life Canvas for your canvas needs. Excellent workmanship!

To expand on what ng19delta said, the prefix for a M-37 engine is T-245. Both are the 6-cylinder flathead 230 engine. The transmissions are entirely different. There was an early transmission (88950) and a late transmission (New Process 420). Neither will work in the WC 3/4 ton series without some serious modifications. The transfer case is also different. Many of the other components between the 2 series trucks are identical including the wheel brake cylinders which are unusual in that you have 2 rights and 2 lefts instead of front and rear. Post if you have any other questions or need pics. I have a restored 1942 WC-51 and am currently restoring a 1953 M-37 if you have any questions.

I have to agree with John on recommending New Life Canvas. I have a full set on my WC-51 and it's fits and looks great. Also, just in case you need a good parts supplier check out http://www.midwestmilitary.net/. They can get you everything from A to Z.
