Looks like an M38, more photos of all sides and interior would be helpful.

Note the glove box, fuel tank guard, hole in dash for the heater system. I'm pretty sure this is an M38. Check the motor for a stamping on the boss in front of the thermostat housing. If it says MCXXXXX or RMCXXXXX that would make it an M38 Motor. Also check for a data plate on wheel housing behind the riders seat. It appears that the large dash piece that would have the M38 data plates is missing, look for 4 small screw holes that would hold this plate on, approx 11"x7".

Oops missed this, motor looks to be an F head? If so, this is definitely not correct for an M38.

Removable gauge panel, square glove box lid, one piece windshield, flat vender, vent in windshield, M-38 no doubt.

Thanks Dan and everyone else input- The wrong/ taller engine with overhead valves must be the reason for the modified hood. What part of the rear wheel jeep body behind the passenger seat will I see the Data Plate. What if its been removed?

looks like a very restorable M-38.
The correct style engines are available!
A vast amount of informatin is here on the "G", M-38 forum.
Careful you can get the "OD" disease!

The small data plate in the drivers wheel well, is forward about half way up the inner body behind the seat.

Cheers, Ed

The Chassis Serial number should be on the front side of the Passenger wheel house right behind the passenger seat.
