Unknown truck

Postby SB5477 » Sat Feb 04, 2012 11:12 am

Years ago when I was in elementary school, saw an old truck at the school on the neighbouring yard. The people living there operated a travelling circus. They were very unfriendly, plus they had a huge dog just the same. For these reasons I could not take a closer look, only a picture over the fence. It was a short framed truck, the engine six cylinder inline OHV and right hand drive. Would like to find out what it was. Any idea?

I'm guessing British Scammell "Pioneer" 6x6 artillery prime mover.

Hi Chupa, thanks for trying. It is maybe a Scammel, but the engine of the Scammel looks different, at least on those pictures I've seen. I may try on a British forum.

Well it is right hand drive ( from the steering column ) an the cab looks British. Engine bay is too wide for most Scammels and the engine is too small. It doesn't look like a Bedford cab, so probably a British 3 ton Lorry like an Austin

Hello Gordon, the head looks a little bit like Austin(passenger car) or other British Leyland products such as MG. Have not seen too many Austin lorry engines yet, but I am going to check them out. Thanks.

The engine has a water take off from the centre of the cylinder block and generator and water pump driven off timing cover so its not Austin or Bedford, definatly not a military Scammel, much too small, just because its right hand drive does not necessary mean its British, pre war French and other continental trucks were built as RHD

Maybe these sites can help: http://museeducamion.com/ or http://www.travellerdave.co.uk/

Really looks like a French make - Berliet, Latil, Reanult, or?

Then again, could be a Csepel, Praga, Skoda or other Eastern European make? Not going to say Tatra, as I understood most of their vehicles are air cooled.
