Pulley for Alternator

Postby wylde » Tue Jan 31, 2012 5:51 pm

I am about to get my Jeep up and running, lacking a few parts here and there.

Going to do the 12v Electrical with single wire gm Alternator.

I was told to I would need a Large V grove belt Pulley. Can some one talk to me in detail on what I need, were to get it, and Ect.

Thanks for any and all help.

Early vehicles used a wider V-belt which gives a bigger contact patch. You need a pulley that will accommodate the wider belt.

While the belt will ride in a narrow groove pulley, the top portion of the belt (meaning part of the sides will protrude above the sides of the pulley, reducing the contact patch & increasing the risk that the belt can jump out.

Hello
I have just converted my jeep to run an alternator and had pulleys machined out of an alloy.
The alternator I used is a Lucas 16ACR as fitted to Land Rovers and MGB's
I could probably send a photo and drawings if you let me have your e-mail address to:-

Thanks for the help, I am hoping that some one may have a resource for a pulley.

or if some one has an alternator with the correct pulley, that they are no longer using, and want to part with.

You might try someplace that supplies alternator's for agricultural equipment.
Automotive V belts are pretty much 3/8 width but some ag. applications used wider 5/8 width belts.
You might also be able to split the difference with a 1/2 inch width belt.
A bit narrow for the jeep pulleys and a bit wide for the alt. pulley but might work.

You might check with the hot -rod aftermarket suppliers for a "deep groove" pulley.
Drag racers use these to help with throwing belts at high rpms.

I think the jeep water pump and crankshaft pulleys use a smaller width/depth/angled belt than most alternators do as you have surmised. I am sure some alternators use smaller or larger belts than others, but I think in the end you will not easily be able to match one to the jeep pulleys. The other option was mentioned, i.e., machining new water pump and crank pulleys to match the alternator pulley.

Having them the SAME is a great goal but not easy to source or cheap if you have to pay for machining. Not all belts are created equal either so you may find one that fits the jeep pulleys but rides a bit low in the alternator pulley groove....this is another option but getting one the right diameter will be difficult and you are pretty much left with roaming the internet or eyeballing a wall of belts in a parts store looking for something.

Whatever you end up with....will probably be a compormise unless you fork out the $$$ to machine them up to match or get lucky with finding an alternator pulley that matches the jeep ones.....so you will need to keep an eye on the one you go with....be sure it is tight enough, that it is not wearing out too fast....and of course, carry one or two with you in the jeep. If they do wear abnormally, you can probably soon learn how long one will last before it is shredded and ready to jump or fall apart.

Just give them the part number for the MB/GPW V-Belt and they can look the dimensions of the belt and match a pulley. It is very simple to do.

Just8Ns.com has them. A lot of guys with the old N tractors convert to 12v. . Here's one.

Go to your local REAL auto electrician [not the chain store variety].

When doing these type things one will find that there are not only differences in V belt dimensions & angles but that there is in pulley diameter. This diameter governs the RPM the alternator/generator runs @ & the field excitation to get the alternator up & running.

Rather than jumping out of the groove the important issue with belts fitting in the groove properly, with the right angle & adjustment is the friction between the belt & pulley's groove. When the alternator/generator is charging or starting to charge that event is not unlike when an air conditioner compressor comes in & out putting a load on the belt, trying to make it slip.

That 5/8" grooved pulley should fit the belt width, but the 2-1/4" diameter is smaller than the original pulley. A good thing as it will spin the alt faster than the generator, making it charge better at low RPMS. The stock fan belt may end up being a little long, but since you are swapping in an alternator with a custom bracket, the belt length most likely would be off, anyways.
