Ford GTB 198483

Postby Bodger Baz » Sat Jun 25, 2011 12:58 am

Here are some pictures of my GTB restoration, its getting there slowly.

The truck came in as a chassis cab from the USA to the UK about 4-5 years ago through a friend, i bought it two years ago complete with a cargo body that was imported from the USA 2 years ago. it was originally a bomb service truck but is now a cargo. the cargo body came from Kentucky, it still had USN 108083 on the tailgate. the US number of the truck had been removed at some point several paint layers back! although two "S" markings were still present on the scuttle. it was painted yellow on top of the original OD as many GTB's seem to have been i believe this was for road building?

now just making the troop seats and canvas to complete.

Baz:

curious about how you mounted your gas tank. I know you fabricated one so it's not exactly original, but wondering if you have any pictures of how you mounted it.

I have an original tank, but no rear mounting bracket (part GTB 9054)

Nice work! Good to see a GTB on these shores. They're not too common in Europe. What are they like to drive? Like a Jeep or like a Dodge WC?

Played around a bit with one of your pic's, just for fun. Hope you don't mind:

Keep up the good work, and keep us informed of your progress.

Will you be at W&P/Beltring this year? I plan to have my newly restored Dodge WC51/Willys MBT combo on a shake down cruise there.

i made a rear mount very similar to the original, not exactly the same as it is fixed to the fuel tank permanently but its looks correct and does the job a treat.

I like what you did with the picture.

They are great to drive, quite quick for 1.5 ton truck and they have a small turning circle. i would compare them to driving Dodge WC with lighter steering!, very similar performance. mine seems to cruise quite happily between 45-50 mph. have pushed it up to 60 mph but the noise is deafening!! one problem i have found is that it gets stuck really easy in 2 wheel drive, forget gravel driveways or grass, its hopeless unless you put it in 4 wheel drive!

Hope to be at W&P this year, will have to see nearer the time. will be going to Armour and Embarkation the month before which is looking to be an amazing event this year. I will be driving to the Belgium Winter Rally next weekend in Houffiliaze.

Cheers

The truck made the 792 mile round trip to Houffalize and back for the BMVT winter rally, only a couple of miner problems to speak of, so all round a great drive :D
And it won best vehicle in show :D :D
