WW2 jeep with v8 engine

Hi,

Looking for a MB or GPW with a V8 engine that is operational and safe to drive. Doesn't have to be perfect, but I don't want to do a full rebuild.
Must have a title.

Guys used to make these for mud boggers. WW2 jeeps aren't exactly safe to drive on the road with a 4 cylinder engine so putting a v8 in one is potential suicide.

I would stick to a small block Ford or Chevy. The weight of a bigger motor will be too much for the WWII Jeep frame rails. They will crack over time. It is hard to beat that V8 sound but honestly, a better conversion all the way around is a Buick v6. It will give you all the torque you need, be lighter, and have more room in the engine bay. Advanced Adaptors has all the hardware for any one of tese conversions.

I have a civilian Willys with a Buick v6 conversion. Clean way to go(I must add this is a scratch built jeep not a modified original). Can even use stock CJ parts from the 60s, clutch T-90 etc, as this was a stock Jeep v6 in the CJ-5. This engine weighs in as much as a Ford small v8.

225 Buick odd fire in M38 w/TH400 trans Dana 20 xfer and Advance headers, power 4wheel disc brakes, power steering (saginaw).

Also the Chevy Vortec v6 with fuel injection would be my choice, it is very powerful and reliable..
I do prefer Stock WW2 jeeps!

Local farmer years back, up here in NY had a MB with a flat head Ford V8. It was unstopable from what I here. harve

Thanks for the replies guys.

I know that the v6 is better and easier to put in, but I prefer the v8. Now a flathead ford v8 would be the perfect choice, but I think I would need some heavy front springs to handle the weight.

Ed, I have an original '42 GPW with the L-head engine and I want to keep it stock. I just would like to have another and give it the original outside OD look with combat rims and non directional tyres, but with a v8 under the hood. :D

Perhaps a MB or GPW with a flathead v8 will show up in the future, I'm looking for one, but not in a hurry.

Gerben,

I friend of mine ran an M38 for years with a 289 V8 in it and it was rock solid and quite dependable. The bigger tires and rims he ran also gave it more stability as it increased the track width. The T90 and more robust frame of the M38 was also a bonus. Do this with an M38 and stick an MB grill on it and you're good to go. . . . a really nice set up plus you have the utility of the tailgate.

Don't forget to stick the Saturn/Warn overdrive unit in there!

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the idea of using a M38 frame. I still have one for about 30 years with the driveline intact, it looks like it's stronger than a cj2a or cj3a frame.
Now I need to find a V8 engine and a bodytub with WW2 grill and build it together. Oh well, perhaps in 5 years. I still have to finish my dukw first before I will start another project otherwise nothing will be readdy to use.

I think I will wait until the right one comes along, should be something out there that is build in WW2 style and that would be fore sale sooner or later.

If one likes the sound of a V8, what is wrong with one of those Buick V8 engines that were subsequently used on RangeRovers?
