Carb Setting and fuel pump ?

Postby hatleyn » Fri Jan 13, 2012 9:52 pm

I just got my fuel pump put on. I noticed in the filter that gas finally started coming through ever turn on the motor. My question about this is does it take a while to fill up the bowl and stuff in the carb? Also the jeep well crank up with starting fluid but I do believe the carb needs to be tuned up can someone tell me how many turns and stuff should be done on it. I think it has been rebuilt and is in great condition, but the screws settings may be off some. Also should I try to crank it with just fuel coming through the lines, or spray fluid in it tell it cranks up since I put a new fuel pump and lines in?

Thanks

Well the first thing you need to do is make sure gas is getting to the carb. If the filter filled up it most likely is. Are you using the choke? To start a 151 the choke has to be pulled out. Pumping the gas pedal does nothing at all because the accelerator pump is vacuum operated and therefore does not work until you are running. There is only one external adjustment on the carburetor and that is the idle mixture screw. If it is an older A1 series carb the screw is external on the manifold flange just right of center looking from the drivers side. If it is a later A2 carb the screw is in the same place but recessed into the flange and possibly has a plug over it. The mixture adjustment will not keep it from starting but it will affect the idle and top end to some extent. The external screw should be turned all the way in GENTLY!!!!!! Then back it out 2 turns, the recessed screw turn in and back out about 6 turns. These are just preliminary adjustments and will need to be reset when warmed up. There is also the idle speed setting which is not usually changed during a rebuild but you want to make sure it contacts the stop and then add about a turn and a half. The float settings are 9/32's from the flange and 3/8's drop. There is a drain plug in the bottom of the carb bowl, you can remove that to see if there is gas going into the carb but be sure to put a rag over the generator to keep gas out of it. If you have gas in the filter and it starts on starting fluid it should run, I would guess the float is stuck or not set right.

Where are you located? Is it cold or warm outside?

Thanks I got the jeep running i'm located in NC it is around 40 degrees.

The jeep cranks up and runs once I take the chock all the way off the jeep, idles fine, but then when I hit the gas it sputters. If I put the chock on 1/4 open or up to a 1/2 open it runs smooth and well accelerate and decelerate fine. There is not any smoke coming out of the pipe on any chock settings.

I let the jeep idle for around 10 min's till it got warm, and I started to notice anti freeze coming down the drivers side of the radiator and I cut the engine. Is this a over heat problem that goes along with cleaning or getting a new radiator (or could it be a water pump issue), I looked all over and could not see any types of holes? It only leaks when it gets warmed up and comes out pretty fast, I let the jeep cool back down for around 20 min's restarted it and no leak, but then happing again when it got warm.

Thanks

What does your temperature gauge say? It sounds like a stuck thermostat. The sputtering sounds like the accelerator pump is bad in the carb, needs a rebuild.

My temp gauge does not work. How do I fix a stuck thermostat? Is the accelerator pump located in the very bottom of the carb right beside the bowl?

Thermostat will have to be replaced, they are cheap. Yes the accelerator pump is on the bottom side of the bowl. Pay attention to the spring location in the pump. It should be on the cover side of the diaphragm.

Where exactly is radiator fluid coming out? From a hose or from the overflow pipe?

Have you considered a bad head gasket? If you have a leak of compression into the water passages, it will not only cause a miss but also over pressure the cooling system.

It was coming out of the overflow pipe on the right side. I got to go pick up my new thermostat today and well get back with you and let you know if that fixed the problem.

Also how much anti freeze and water should go in the jeep?

Thanks

Neil, I REALLY hate to say this but you need to pick up at least the -10 and -20 manuals and read through them.

The radiator should be filled with a 50/50 mix of antifreeze to the halfway point in the top tank. I would not think it is a head gasket because that would pressurize the system right away, not wait until hot. Are you sure the radiator was not overfilled? If it was then normal expansion would push water out. If that is the case it will find its own level shortly after pushing out the excess.

An M151 radiator will seek it's own level. If I fill mine up much past where I can see 1/8 to 1/4 inch above the bottom of the top radiator tank, it will blow it out the overflow pipe until it gets back to the above mentioned level.

You can download several different editions of the Organizational Maintenance manual TM 9-2320-218-20 (commonly referred to as the "20 manual") from the M151 specific website G838.org. Just scroll down and click on the section marked "G838 Manuals". For more in depth repair of individual components, down load a copy of the Direct Support Maintenace manual TM 9-2320-218-34, otherwise known as the "34 manual". Good luck.

Also get the -10 manual and read it. The M151 can be quirky to drive and downright dangerous if you do not drive it right.
