need some info

Postby buck5eighty » Tue Jan 10, 2012 11:24 pm

Hello all, this past summer i was digging through an old shed at my parents place and came across on old jerry can. i would appreciate any info that you may have on it, in terms of where it was manufactured, where it would have been used in the war, and possible value. any help would be appreciated. i recall dad using this to fill the fuel tank on his lawn tractor when i was a kid. i also recall him having a second one which i couldn't locate. the whole thing is pretty solid, other than the typical wear and tear.

The marking is "USSPC-B" and probably the date is 1945. Where and by whom it was used is unknown unless you found some field-added markings to an outfit or base or something. The spout is also a WWII era one and of some value.

Collectors looking to add one from this company would be the best bet for a value and would be interested in it...anyone with a WWII vehicle that has a jerry can might want the spout.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO "RESTORE" or otherwise alter the condition....it's value in the "AS-IS" condition is highest!

USSPC is either U.S. Steel Products Company, or U.S. Steel Pressing Company.
I don't remember now where I heard that info from.

20-5-45
20= the gauge(thickness) of the steel used for making it.
5= the capacity in U.S. gallons.
45= the year of manufacture.

ICC 5L= Interstate Commerce Commission specification 5L that the can had to meet.

A neat unmolested pair, that might appeal to more than one jeep collector.
If you end up selling them, and my advice is to sell them as a pair, leave it to the buyer to restore the can.
The fuel nozzle appears as still fitted with the screw on filter, which is a neat thing .

Maybe a little gentle cleaning on the bottom with a wire brush to enhance the stamped information might help for a second picture, but that is not paramount.

I would be interested in selling the set if someone made me an offer. I live in Canada, and if someone from the USA wanted this, I would somehow have to try to get it past customs, if at all possible. But, if there is a Canadian out there who wants it, that would maybe be easier for shipping.

Careful! This might be questioned as it goes against the rules: asking for an offer is not allowed.
You might put a price, or enquire about a suggested value without mentioning sale.
To make it easy for you, I will give you my own opinion on a price.
Around thirty/ thirtyfive dollars for each of the two items.
Shipping the fuel nozzle alone would be way easier.
