For Sale - 1944 BSA M20 [SOLD]

Postby ziggyfoos » Sat Oct 22, 2011 9:51 am

BIKE IS SOLD!

Early 1944 frame (101531) with 1940 engine (5960) [REME tag present as well from 1951 engine overhaul]

Paintjob is so-so with some off-color touch-ups. There are thin spots, chips, dents and scratches.

Schipperfabrik pannier bags and Y-straps included.

The fuel tank unit markings and C number are completely wrong for this year bike. Previous owner applied them after reading the story of the real bike it represents (early war).

Previous owner was a Brit bike enthusiast and installed a Powerdynamo and Triumph clutch (old one slipped and dragged). Pics of the clutch conversion can be seen here:
http://s107.photobucket.com/albums/m311 ... 20/Clutch/

Other parts included with the bike (also see pics in my photobucket album linked below):
- Original pillion seat and saddle, both need new covering material (tape is covering the holes for the pillion seat on the bike)
- Original magdyno - previous owner said it was working but I can't confirm.
- Original clutch (or at least "original" as in M20?) - debatable condition.
- Freshly bored spare cylinder head but it has a chipped fin, but the chipped piece is included if repair attempt desired?)
- New spare piston.
- Spare gearbox - condition unknown.

It has a valid clean lien-free NC vehicle title. Ready to go.

Unfortunately the bike just sits in my garage so it hasn't been ridden in over a year but I start it up about once every two weeks. It now has a smoky exhaust, I'm assuming due to lack of use the oil is pooling?

Here's a video showing the smoke:

Asking $5300.

Ziggy,
What is the smaller motorcycle in the background?

It's a 1943 James ML.

Yes I know. I meant that tank marking and the low C number are wrong for this specific bike. It (my bike) is incorrectly marked as an early war bike when it is not.

Guys,

Just wanted to chip in some comments. That is a nice looking bike and the price is fair. Does it have the original WD toolbox?

Here is a wartime photo from Iceland (my collection) 1940, showing the early BSA M20 with "delux" rear mudguard and larger
fuel tank. Note the same Polar bear insignia on tank, although that is the earlier "head down" versison.

I'm not sure how to ID an original toolbox, but I don't know believe it is original since it has a latch to add a lock welded on the top of the box, unless this was just welded on top of the original? Or was done post-war since the bike was still in use or while it was civilian in the UK?

Hinrik,
The bike looks like it has the correct toolbox to me.
It has the correct bolt that hold the lid shut.
What is wrong with it?

I'm not sure why Hinrik asked about the toolbox but the only reason I had doubts that mine may not be original is that latch welded onto the top of it to allow a lock to be used. I didn't think the wartime bikes originally had that? But that was just my assumption. Or like I mentioned it may have been just welded onto the original box postwar since it's not bolted to the box.

Almost every WD M20 I've ever seen in this country (30+), mine included, have the hasp welded to the toolbox to add a padlock. I think this was a postwar modification. M20s carried an extensive set of tools in that toolbox, and they would have quickly been stolen from an unattended bike otherwise.

Still for sale.

I've also added a video showing the smoky exhaust:

The email ended up in my junk mail folder for some reason so I missed it. I've replied to your email now. The M20 is still for sale and the asking price is as stated above with the sale info. (the price was previously edited down)
